Boston College dominates Florida State, drops Seminoles to 0-2

Boston College opened its season in impressive fashion under first-year coach Bill O'Brien. The Eagles, a double-digit underdog, upset Florida State 28-13 at Doak Campbell Stadium Labor Day Monday to drop the Seminoles to 0-2. FSU, which opened the season ranked 10th, has a bye Saturday and returns to action Sept. 14 against Memphis.

The Seminoles have dropped three consecutive games dating back to the bowl defeat to Georgia last year.

Florida State running out of time vs. Boston College at Doak Campbell Stadium

FSU trails visiting Boston College 28-13 with 7:48 remaining in the game. Neither team has been able to put together a sustained drive in the fourth quarter. The Seminoles just forced an Eagles punt and will have possession at their 20. Their drive stalled, however. It was hurt by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on offensive lineman TJ Ferguson on third down, pushing the Seminoles into a fourth-and-20, resulting in a punt from the FSU 36.

Boston College answers FSU's score, surges in front 28-13 in 3rd quarter

Boston College relied on its run game to move down the field in an impressive answer to the Seminoles' touchdown. Kye Robichaux powered for a 2-yard score and Luca Lombardo's point-after pushed the Eagles' advantage to 28-13 at the 1:03 mark in the third quarter. Seven of BC's eight plays on the scoring drive were runs. The Eagles have 192 rushing yards in the game for an average of 5.2 yards per rush.

Florida State's offense wakes up, Kentron Poitier scores on 29-yard catch

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and Florida State's offense finally showed some explosiveness. Uiagalelei connected on a 29-yard scoring pass to Kentron Poitier, who fought off a tackler, and Ryan Fitzgerald added the extra point to pull FSU within 21-13 at the 5:18 mark in the third quarter. FSU covered 72 yards in 5 plays and 1:58. The drive included a flea-flicker from Uiagalelei to Poitier for 29 yards to the BC 29.

Florida State's 4th-down decision backfires, Boston College leads 21-6

Florida State coach Mike Norvell's decision to go for it on fourth-and-5 at the FSU 47 to open the third quarter backfired. Pressured in the pocket, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei's pass was intercepted by Max Tucker and returned 58 yards to the FSU 7. Two plays later, BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Kye Robichaux. Luca Lombardo's extra point extended the Eagles' lead to 21-6.

Florida State settles for another Ryan Fitzpatrick field goal, trails 14-6 at the half

The Seminoles finally showed signs of life late in the second quarter, but they could not convert a second consecutive drive into the red zone into a touchdown. Instead, they had to settle for another Ryan Fitzpatrick field goal, this time from 24 yards to pull within BC 14-6. FSU drove 70 yards in 13 plays, converting a key fourth-down inside two minutes. But it was a case of missed opportunities. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, for example, overthrew a wide open Darion Williamson in the end-zone corner on second-and-goal from the BC 6.

FSU placekicker Ryan Fitzpatrick drills 31 yard field goal

The Seminoles finally held Boston College on downs, this time deep in Eagles territory, and started a possession with ideal field position. They recorded their first down of the game on a 25-yard pass from DJ Uiagalelei to Jaylin Lucas on third-and-five at the BC 30. However, they had to settle for a 31-yard field goal from Ryan Fitzpatrick to slice BC's lead to 14-3 at the 5:05 mark in the second quarter.

Boston College's Treshaun Ward scores against former team

Boston College extended its advantage to 14-0 on Thomas Castellanos swing pass to Treshaun Ward, a former FSU running back, for a 13-yard touchdown at the 9:58 mark in the second quarter. Luca Lombardo added the extra point. The Eagles again put together an impressive drive, covering 68 yards on seven plays that lasted 3:19. FSU vs Boston College predictions

Liam Rooney, Tallahassee Democrat: FSU 30, BC 21

"It won't be an easy game as the Eagles come to town looking for a first win under new head coach Bill O'Brien and Castellanos will challenge the defense with his running ability, but the Seminoles should be able to do enough to win. However, if the issues that were present in the Georgia Tech loss pop up, FSU could be in for a long night."

Peter Holland Jr., Tallahassee Democrat: FSU 27, BC 13

"Mike Norvell must play into quarterback DJ Uiagalelei's strength, which is throwing the ball downfield. ... FSU looked better in the second half (vs. Georgia Tech) once they opened the playbook to Oregon State transfer."

Bill Bender, Sporting News: FSU 34, BC 20

"This spread looks high considering the Eagles lost 31-29 last season in a game where quarterback Thomas Castellanos had 305 passing yards and 95 rushing yards. The Eagles will try to copy-cat Georgia Tech, but the Seminoles will pull away in the fourth quarter."

Chris Hummer, 247 Sports: FSU 38, BC 21

"There's a bit of mystery around what BC will look like under Bill O'Brien, but almost the entire offense is back and there were some defensive upgrades made in the portal. Plus, the game between these two last year went down to the wire. Florida State wins but give me the Eagles to cover."
