FSU football vs. UNC report card: UNC's RB Omarion Hampton's 5 TDs give defense a failing grade
Florida State football kept falling and couldn't escape its beatdown by North Carolina's top rusher, Omarion Hampton. His five-touchdown performance led FSU to suffer its fifth straight loss, 35-11.
The Seminoles dropped to 1-8 on the season. This is the first time since 1974 that the Seminoles have started the year 1-8 and could potentially end the year as a one-win team.
UNC's coach Mack Brown picked his first career win against FSU, putting him at 1-11 against the Seminoles. The Tar Heels improve 5-4 after back-to-back ACC victory convincingly.
"Obviously very disappointing outcome," Mike Norvell said in his opening statement.
"Congratulations to Carolina. They did a great job and really dominated the game in pretty much all phases, offense, defense, special teams. We have to be better than what we put on display today. I thought our guys, they worked in preparation but did not have the application for what I expected, what I anticipated seeing."
While the Seminoles have three games left to play, they ended league play at 1-7, the worst the program has had since joining the ACC.
FSU has Notre Dame, Charleston Southern, and Florida in its remaining schedule.
Here are the grades on FSU's performance.

Offense: F
FSU made another change on the offensive line for the eighth time in nine games.
Andre Otto started at guard, and Jacob Rizy moved to center. The result remained the same, if not worse.
Neither Brock Glenn, who started for the Seminoles, nor Luke Kromenhoek had any time to throw the football, leading to one completion in the first half.
Following a defensive stop inside the red zone by FSU, the line allowed two sacks on Glenn, leading to a three-and-out. FSU allowed a season-high seven sacks.
The running game, as usual, was non-existent, as it only netted 42 yards on the ground.
FSU showed a little life when Glenn connected to Malik Benson for a 50-yard pass, setting up FSU's first touchdown score on fourth-and-3 to Ja'Khi Douglas. Freshman receiver Lawayne McCoy converted a two-point conversion.
"I thought as we were about to make a spark, made it a 10-point game there in the third quarter, and then their drive down -- we have opportunities," Norvell said.
"We have guys in position to be able to go provide that spark, and we've just got to be better at finishing in that, and as I said, have to do a better job in every phase of us being a better football team than what we're putting on display."
Glenn finished 6 of 11 passes for 123 yards and one TD. Douglas had two catches, while six receivers had one reception in the game.

Defense: F
The defense turned in its worst performance. For the second time, the Seminoles allowed 500 yards of offense. A chunk full of it went to Hampton.
Hampton had himself a field day against the Seminoles, registering 265 total yards and five total touchdowns.
The five-touchdown performance is career-best for the junior. The last player to score five TDs against FSU's defense was Lamar Jackson in 2016, when Louisville beat the Seminoles 63-20.
FSU's poor tackling and failure to get off the field on third down have been consistently abysmal.
North Carolina went 11-for-16 in third downs converted, UNC also had nearly 40 minutes of time of possession.
"You look at third downs, time of possession, it was extremely one-sided, and for us, even when we have those things, a positive play, a positive moment, just not being able to sustain that, to build upon that is something that's really hurt this team, and it's hurt us throughout the course of the year," Norvell said.
The best play for the defense was a fourth-and-1 inside the one that kept the Tar Heels out of the endzone in the first quarter. Linebacker Omar Graham Jr. made the tackle. North Carolina has been on the run since then.
FSU safety Shyheim Brown led the Seminoles with nine tackles. Four different Seminoles registered for 0.5 tackles for loss, and Darrell Jackson recorded FSU's only sack of the day.

Special Teams: B
Special teams consistently have been the brighter spot for the Seminoles all year. Saturday's loss to the Tar Heers is no different.
The best play of the day was kicker Ryan Fitzgerald nailing a 56-yard field goal to put the points on the board for the Seminoles in the first quarter. Fitzgerald is now a perfect 10 for 10 in field goals, 5 for 5 in 50-plus.
Alex Mastromanno has also not been a disappointment, as he netted 238 yards on five punting attempts. Three of the punts went 50 yards or more. His longest punt was 57 yards, putting the Tar Heels in the 20.
The kicking team did allow a 49-yard kickoff return in the first quarter.

Coaches: F
This was another poor presentation by Norvell and his coaching staff, which failed to put together a game plan against the Tar Heels.
The quarterbacks suffered earlier due to another shuffle on the offensive, which allowed seven sacks. FSU's offense has not put together a 300-total yards performance for nine straight games and was 2 for 10 on third down.
The defense had no answer in shutting down UNC's run game, mainly for Hampton. The constant poor execution from the players also reflects the poor coaching, leading to another disappointing result.
"We talked about the importance of trying to establish and get the ground game going as well as the importance of having to stop the run against one of the most talented backs that we've played, and obviously that was something that we failed to do on both sides," Norvell said.
