FSU football QB's Luke Kromenhoek, Brock Glenn have strong practice, defense steps up
Florida State football began preparation for its game vs. North Carolina Tuesday morning.
The Seminoles (1-7) are coming off a 36-14 blowout loss to rival Miami (8-0) and welcome the Tar Heels (4-4) to town on Saturday. Head coach Mike Norvell said it was an important practice as the team welcomes North Carolina to Doak Campbell Stadium at 3:30 p.m. on the ACC Network.
"I thought today was a good effort. Good intensity," Norvell said. "Thought we had some physical work throughout today's practice just trying to go push and get better. Like I said on Monday, it's about going to get the job done. Obviously, hard work is the minimum expectation, that needs to show up."
"We got to make sure coaches players, and everyone involved executes the plan and puts ourselves in a position to go win this game."
Here are three takeaways from practice.
Flashes from the young quarterbacks
Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek both had a few flashes in practice, with Glenn making a couple of nice downfield throws.
Glenn started his two-minute drill well, connecting with Hykeem Williams early. He was relatively strong in his decision making and he made a few nice plays with his legs. In one-on-ones, Glenn made a few strong throws, including one deep ball to Ja'Khi Douglas that drew a strong reaction from coaches and players.
He continued to make good reads throughout the day, but he had a few missed throws that you want to see made. Glenn connected with Darion Williamson for a touchdown pass in team activities. It was a solid day for Glenn.
Kromenhoek had a few big throws, especially to freshmen BJ Gibson and Lawayne McCoy. He made a good read to find Gibson with a pretty ball past a defensive back, following it with a nice pass to Douglas.
He did have a few dangerous balls that were read well by the defense, but he mostly kept the ball safe with some smart reads.
Trever Jackson had some moments on Tuesday, making a couple of nice throws and showing his progression from the start of the season.
A couple of standouts on offense
The defense had a strong day, but there were a few standouts on the offensive side of the football.
The freshmen wide receivers Gibson, McCoy and Elijah Moore all had good moments. Moore has continued to play at a high level, even getting his first reps of the season vs. Miami on Saturday.
Gibson did a great job of fighting through contact as he was facing tight coverage the entire day. He fought off a defensive back who was draped all over him in one-on-one work and he made a nice catch, following it with similar reps throughout the day.
Williams, Samuel Singleton Jr. and Landen Thomas all flashed in moments as well. Williams's best rep of the day actually came in pass-blocking when he ran over a defensive back to open a running lane for a running back. He still made some good catches and showcased his physicality.
Singelton continues to make strides, building well on the momentum he got after his kick return touchdown vs. Duke.
Defense takes over portions of practice
The Seminoles defense was the real winner of the day. It has easily been the stronger side of the football this season and that continued in Tuesday's practice as the defensive backs in particular stepped up with some strong plays.
Edwin Joseph and Azareye'h Thomas were two of the standouts on the day. Joseph made a few acrobatic deflections by leaping in front of passes before making it to their intended target.
Thomas played at the highest level on Tuesday. he did well in coverage against all the receivers he faced, keeping offensive production to a minimum when he was targeted.
Ricky Knight also had a big impact on the day. He faced a variety of wide receivers and held his own in coverage. Earl Little Jr had some strong plays as he continues his transition to safety.
Linebackers Justin Cryer and Shawn Murphy flashed with a few stops in the run game, and Murphy had a nice pass deflection in pass coverage.
