Florida State football's OL problems can be traced to one thing: Miscommunication

Florida State football has had an ever-spinning carousel of starting offensive linemen this season.

In the 36-14 loss to Miami on Saturday, the Seminoles started the seventh different offensive line group of the season. Harvard transfer Jacob Rizy started the game at left guard as Darius Washington missed the game with an injury.

The Seminoles' offensive line has struggled this season due to injuries, assignment issues and miscommunication. Those issues have contributed to the team's faltering offensive production.

"We can't have, if it's an offensive line five guys next to each, we can't have four executing a call and then one not," FSU head coach Mike Norvell said. "We've got to make sure as we are out there on the field that if there is a check or something that we are doing that we are not communicating that clearly throughout."

"It's all level, coaches, players, we got to make sure we all understand the importance of it, and we try to create that throughout the course of the week with practice."

The Seminoles (1-7) made changes to its depth chart for its game vs. North Carolina as Rizy maintains his starting role and freshman Andre' Otto moves to a backup center role.

It's an effort to try and find some continuity for the unit as FSU still searches for ways to improve its offensive output with four games left this season.

The offensive line struggles haven't been the sole issues as drops and quarterback struggles have been well-documented, but it's clear that the issues up front haven't helped the poor offensive production from the Seminoles.

The team averages 14.8 points per game and 272.5 yards of total offense and there has been little offering from the run game all season.

All of those issues were again present vs. Miami as the Seminoles finished with 14 points and 248 yards of total offense, narrowly avoiding a season-low offensive output with a late touchdown drive.

Communication issues between quarterbacks, O-line hurting FSU's offense

Both Norvell and offensive coordinator Alex Atkins said there were communication issues against the Hurricanes between the quarterbacks and linemen. Norvell said the environment paired with young quarterbacks Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek presented some challenges.

Atkins feels he needs to game plan better, especially with an offensive line being shuffled like a card deck every week and three different quarterbacks taking meaningful snaps this season.

He said he needs to make sure players understand their roles better to make sure communication is clear during games.

"We have got to be able to adapt and improvise and got to make sure that the plan we are giving them can be executed," Atkins said. "I take ownership that if there is communication problems or mishaps, that means I put too much on them and I got to make sure that it can be as something as simple as it can."

The Seminoles rank 110th in the nation in sacks allowed with just under three per game (2.8) and 23 allowed this season.

Dating back to when DJ Uiagalelei was the starter, FSU has had issues preventing pressure from reaching the quarterback, with all three signal-callers this season spending a lot of time running away from pressure.

Against Miami, both Glenn and Kromenhoek spent much of the game outside of the pocket trying to buy time to make a play. The Seminoles allowed four quarterback hurries, three sacks and four tackles for loss as the offense struggled to get going again.

Norvell said that the miscommunications between the quarterbacks and offensive linemen led to some missed opportunities on plays that could have helped the team build momentum.

He said those areas need to be better, especially with Glenn and Kromenhoek still coming up to speed as young quarterbacks.

"In the moment, things moving fast. Those are missed opportunities, and we had a handful of plays you come out of the game where you got 10 guys operating and you see the space, you see the potential and you got to do a better job.

Especially with young quarterbacks that are working in that situation and trying to be as clear as possible and you got to use the different combination up front just guys being locked in on the importance of that communication in the moments so we can go out there and execute properly. "
