Kim Kardashian-West announces new name for shapewear range after backlash
Last month, Kim Kardashian-West announced the launch of her new inclusive shapewear brand, “Kimono”.
Shortly after the release, she faced an online backlash from fans who accused her of cultural appropriation.
Kim, 38, sought to trademark the word “Kimono”, which is a play on her name, but which is also the name of a traditional Japanese garment.
In a post on Instagram, she revealed the new name for her brand will be SKIMS Solutionwear™.

Kim told her 146 million Instagram followers: “My fans and followers are a huge inspiration to me – I’m always listening to their feedback and opinions, and am so grateful they shared their ideas for a new brand name.”
The brand will officially launch on 10 September, but it has already racked up 168,000 followers in just under a day.
The collection will feature shape-enhancing undergarments and has been praised for coming in a range of shapes and skin tones.

Japanese officials flew to the US in July to discuss the incident, but at that point Kim had already decided to change the brand’s name.
In an Instagram post addressing the issue she wrote: “When I announced the name of my shapewear line, I did so with the best intentions in mind.”
“My brands and products are built with inclusivity and diversity at their core and after careful thought and consideration, I will be launching my Solutionwear brand under a new name. I will be in touch soon.”

Kim Kardashian-West is not the first celebrity to come under fire for cultural appropriation recently.
Singer and Entrepreneur, Rihanna, sparked a debate after wearing traditional Chinese dress, makeup and a hairstyle complete with mini fans for her Harper’s Bazaar China cover shoot.
Similarly, Khloe Kardashian became embroiled in a cultural appropriation row after her tribute to Diana Ross was deemed as inappropriate.
