The new cheesy Christmas films to stream now
When it comes to festive entertainment, you can’t beat a good Christmas film. Sure, you have your classics – Elf, Home Alone, The Polar Express – which rightfully deserve their place on our festive viewing watchlist, but you must save some space for a cheese-fest, too – and we’re not talking a sharing camembert.
Every year, come November, a spate of a certain kind of festive flick hits the streamers – the guilty-pleasure watch. Typically, these films are romantic comedies with a predictable storyline, corny lines plucked straight out of a Hallmark film and, of course, a happily ever after.
And this year, we could have our best offering yet: Lindsay Lohan makes an appearance in Netflix’s Our Little Secret, Mean Girls’ Lacey Chabert bring a hot snowman to life and The Merry Gentleman looks like it can be summed up in four words: Magic Mike at Christmas. Sounds like a very merry Christmas indeed…
Here are all the best new cheesy Christmas movies to tuck into this festive season...
Our Little Secret
Lindsay Lohan returns to screens in what looks to be a perfectly cheesy festive film. Lindsay stars as Avery, who is forced to spend Christmas with her ex, Logan, when they discover their current partners are siblings. Kristin Chenoweth also stars as Erica Morgan, the matriarch of the family.
The Freaky Friday actress described her character Avery as “a girl soul-searching on a journey of love.” But we’ll also get to see Lindsay flex her comedy skills: “I think the biggest difference with Avery is that, in this, I did have to do some comedic scenes – I haven’t had to go as deep into that before,” she said.
Watch on Netflix from 27 November.
The Merry Gentlemen
Chad Michael Murray stars in this festive flick about former big-city dancer called Ashley whose parents’ small-town performing arts venue is struggling to stay open. So, to raise funds and save the Rhythm Room, Ashley stages an all-man, Christmas-themed dance revue.
“My character, Ashley, decides to take her skill as a dancer and choreographer and marries that with some hot dudes at the bar to make The Merry Gentlemen show,” explains Britt Robertson, who plays Ashley.
One Tree Hill’s Chad plays Luke, a “kind, confident, and slightly sarcastic” contractor who helps out at the Rhythm Room and gets persuaded into dancing in the show. “We got to change things up a little bit and push the envelope,” Chad told Tudum. “We take a lot of the tropes that have been created for this particular genre and poke fun at them in such a tasteful way.”
Watch on Netflix from 20 November.
Hot Frosty
Mean Girls’ Lacey Chabert and Shitt’s Creek star Dustin Milligan team up for this feelgood Christmas movie with a lot of heart.
Lacey plays Kathy, who, two years after losing her husband, magically brings a handsome snowman to life – played by Dustin. Called Jack, he helps Kathy to embrace life once again. Of course, the two predictably fall for each other just in time for the holidays – but also, crucially, before Jack melts.
“The whole world is brand new to him,” Dustin told Tudum. “It’s refreshing — especially around Christmastime – to experience the magic and the wonder of that season through Jack. He is seeing things brand-new for the very first time and experiencing them with a very trustworthy guide.”
Lacey added: “Jack’s innocence and newness to the world really opens up Kathy’s heart again to seeing the world with a little bit more of a childlike perspective.”
Watch on Netflix from 13 November.
Meet Me Next Christmas
When Layla (Christina Milian) and James (Kofi Siriboe) are delayed at an airport lounge at Christmas, they hit it off and decide, if they’re both single, to meet next year at the Pentatonix Christmas Eve concert. Fast forward a year, Layla is newly single thanks to her cheating partner and desperate to get a ticket to the Pentatonix show and find James – her true love.
The only problem? It’s sold out. So, she hires a personal concierge to track down tickets for her – and in comes Teddy (Devale Ellis). You can guess what happens next – despite Layla’s laser focus on getting a ticket in time for the show, sparks begin to fly between Layla and Teddy as they trawl through New York City, and Layla must make a decision. Sounds like classic festive viewing to us!
