Bills vs. Texans injury update: Buffalo loses more starters, Houston starting RB out

The Buffalo Bills received good news regarding their wounded defense on Monday. They got bad news about a future Hall of Famer facing disciplinary action on Tuesday. Then Friday, Buffalo announced three more starters and a backup defensive lineman will be out for Week 5.

Head coach Sean McDermott said wide receiver Khalil Shakir, defensive tackle Ed Oliver, safety Taylor Rapp and defensive tackle Austin Johnson will miss the game at the Houston Texans at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Shakir and Oliver news is dreadful because neither was expected out when the week began. Shakir returned to Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens after injuring his ankle and led the Bills in receptions and yards receiving, but he wore a walking boot after the game.

Oliver suffered a hamstring injury at practice Thursday.

Rapp was concussed tackling Derrick Henry on Sunday and rookie Cole Bishop will start in his place.

Starting middle linebacker Terrel Bernard, who hasn't played since exiting with a pectoral injury in Week 2, is expected to practice all week and could be on pace to play. But eight-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Von Miller will begin serving a four-game suspension that was handed down Tuesday for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

It's another blow for a Bills defense that has been without linebacker Matt Milano, nickel back Taron Johnson and Rapp due to injuries.

The attrition to the Bills' defense was finally exposed in a 35-10 drubbing by the Baltimore Ravens as Buffalo gave up 271 yards rushing, 199 to Henry.

Houston rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 24-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars but the Texans are more injured on offense. Running backs Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce, and wide receiver Tank Dell were inactive against the Jaguars.

Mixon is not expected to play against the Bills.

NFL teams have to submit a report on practice participation on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for a Sunday game. There are three levels of practice participation that can be designated: did not participate, limited participation and full participation.

A game status report is due by 4 p.m. Friday for Sunday games.

Here is the Bills vs. Texans injury report for Week 5:

Buffalo Bills injury update for Week 5

Khalil Shakir, WR, ankle

Khalil Shakir injured his right ankle while being tackled after making a catch against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4. He had his right ankle taped by athletic trainers and returned to the game, leading the Bills with four catches for 62 yards. Shakir was spotted wearing a walking boot after the game.

Status: Ruled out for Week 5; Shakir did not practice Wednesday or Thursday

Josh Allen, QB, back

Josh Allen was nicked up after taking multiple hits on a play which he was sacked and lost a fumble against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4.

Offensive coordinator Joe Brady called a trick play in the third quarter. Curtis Samuel took a direct snap and pitched the ball to Allen, who was lined up wide. Baltimore linebacker Kyle Van Noy sniffed it out, knocking the ball out of Allen's hands as the quarterback reared back to throw. Allen then was shoved to the ground by Ravens defensive tackle Travis Jones.

“It was a pretty bad play call,” Brady said. “There is no other way to sum that up. Ultimately it cost us a football game.”

Allen lied face down for a moment and was slow to get up. He briefly spoke with the team doctor and a trainer, slammed his tablet on the ground and warmed up throwing on the sideline. He returned on the Bills' next possession.

Backup quarterback Mitchell Trubisky relieved Allen in the fourth quarter because the game was a blowout, not because of injury.

"It was more just my low back hitting the ground than anything," Allen said after the game. "So we're good."

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Monday that Allen "should be fine."

Status: Full participant Wednesday and Thursday

Dion Dawkins, OT, hamstring

Status: Dawkins did not practice Wednesday; limited participant Thursday

Austin Johnson, DT, oblique

Status: Johnson did not practice Wednesday or Thursday

Taylor Rapp, S, head

Taylor Rapp is in the league's concussion protocol. Rapp suffered a concussion taking on Ravens running back Derrick Henry 1-on-1 in Week 4.

Rapp lowered his shoulder and made an open field tackle, hitting Henry's upper thigh with his left shoulder. Rapp was slow to get up but walked off the field with medical staff and headed to the medical tent and the locker room. The Bills downgraded Rapp to out for the remainder of the game with a concussion.

Status: Ruled out for Week 5; Rapp did not practice Wednesday or Thursday

Terrel Bernard, LB, pectoral

Terrel Bernard suffered a pectoral strain in the first quarter against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2. Bernard avoided a torn pectoral and season ending injury, Bills coach Sean McDermott initially said Bernard could be out about a month.

He missed games in Week 3 and Week 4 but returned to practice in a limited capacity last week. Bernard traveled with the team to Baltimore and was on the sideline during game against the Ravens.

Head coach Sean McDermott said Monday he expects Bernard to practice this week.

Status: Bernard was a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday

Taron Johnson, CB, forearm

Taron Johnson was injured seven plays into Week 1 while attempting to tackle Cardinals' wide receiver Greg Dortch. Johnson didn't return to the game. Head coach Sean McDermott didn't give a timetable for the starting nickel back's return but Johnson was not placed on injured reserve, which would have required him to miss four weeks.

Johnson has missed Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4. Johnson traveled with the team to Baltimore and was on the sideline during game against the Ravens.

Head coach Sean McDermott said Johnson is a question mark to practice this week.

Status: Johnson was a limited participant Wednesday and wore a red non-contact jersey for the first time since his injury in the opener; limited participant Thursday

Ed Oliver, DT, hamstring

Joe Mixon, RB, ankle

Joe Mixon hasn't played since hurting his ankle while he was being dragged to the ground on an apparent hip drop tackle in Week 2. Mixon was ridden to the ground by Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards. No flag was thrown but Edwards was later fined $16,883.

Mixon returned to practice in a limited capacity the Friday before Week 4 and was listed as questionable but was inactive for game.
