Two Bills defensive players ruled out for game vs Dolphins: Latest on injuries

As expected, the news was not great on Buffalo Bills nickel cornerback Taron Johnson Monday.

Coach Sean McDermott quelled fans’ fears on Josh Allen’s hand injury, but he announced that Johnson will not play Thursday against the Miami Dolphins due to the forearm injury he suffered in Sunday’s 34-28 victory over Arizona.

“He obviously did not return from the game or in the game, and he’ll be ruled out for this week,” McDermott said, opting not to share any other information regarding Johnson’s injury.

“I don’t know his timeline on when he’ll be back,” McDermott said. “So we’re still doing some further research on that. But as far as other questions go related to injuries, I’m not going to go any further than I’ve already gone.”

Johnson was hurt on the seventh play of the game and that created some issues for the Bills’ defense. They had to go with Cam Lewis as his replacement, and then cornerback JaMarcus Ingram was thrust into the role of the third safety when Buffalo decided to play six defensive backs.

Lewis will start against the Dolphins, and what the Bills might do is activate rookie Cole Bishop and use him as the third safety in dime defense. They may also have to call up rookie Daequan Hardy from the practice squad to serve as the backup to Lewis in the slot.

McDermott also announced that defensive end Dawuane Smoot is most likely out Thursday. He was injured just a few days before the opener and did not play against the Cardinals. The Bills called up Kameron Cline from the practice squad to take his place, but Cline did not play any defensive snaps, only 17 on special teams.

The Bills rotated their top three edge rushers in the game, and that meant Greg Rousseau played 79% of the snaps, AJ Epenesa 62% and Von Miller 48% which are all high totals for the Bills.

McDermott said tight end Quintin Morris and running back Ty Johnson were dinged in the game but both are fine and would go full at practice.
