MLB trade rumors: Christian Walker injury adds wrinkle to DBacks' trade deadline

Mark Polishuk writes: "This sudden uncertainty over Walker’s status is an unwelcome wrinkle for the D’Backs in advance of tomorrow’s trade deadline, as the team was planning to focus on pitching rather than any significant position-player adds."

The Arizona Republic: Diamondbacks still eyeing bullpen help ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline

Nick Piecoro writes: "Even after adding left-hander A.J. Puk in a trade last week, the Diamondbacks remain focused on adding to their bullpen ahead of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline, sources say. ... The Diamondbacks have now turned their focus to more right-handed help, eyeing another reliever they would trust to protect a lead in the middle or late innings."

The Arizona Republic: DBacks still want to add before 2024 MLB trade deadline

Nick Piecoro writes: "General Manager Mike Hazen said he still hopes to further add to his roster ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. … As for where other additions might come, that is not entirely clear, though Hazen did say he wasn’t finished looking into more help for his bullpen, which he already upgraded with Thursday night’s addition of lefty A.J. Puk in a deal with the Miami Marlins.

The Arizona Republic: Diamondbacks could add a starter at MLB trade deadline

Nick Piecoro writes: "Hazen sounded fairly content with the state of his position-player group. He also said he was likely to roll the dice and not acquire a starting pitcher rental, banking instead on right-hander Merrill Kelly and left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez returning to health in the coming weeks. He did leave open the door for the Diamondbacks to pursue a controllable starter, someone who could more firmly fit into the rotation plans next year, though those types of players are not easy to acquire.

The Arizona Republic: Diamondbacks could pursue infield depth before Tuesday's trade deadline

Nick Piecoro writes: "(GM Mike Hazen) has also said in the past week that infield depth could be an area he addresses before the deadline, particularly after prospect Jordan Lawlar’s setback in his return from a hamstring injury."

New York Post: Diamondbacks among teams vying for Marlins pitcher Tanner Scott

Jon Heyman writes: "Looking to enhance their bullpen in a big way, the Yankees are one of six contending teams said prominently involved in trade talks for Marlins All-Star left-hander Tanner Scott, who hasn’t allowed an earned run since June 13 and is the most coveted closer on the market. The AL East rival Orioles, Scott’s former team, are among five more teams also at the front of the pack seeking the best closer sure to be dealt by the trade deadline. The Phillies, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Mariners are thought to be vying for Scott, as well."

Dodger Blue: Diamondbacks could bolster bullpen with Tanner Scott trade

Matthew Moreno writes: "Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks addressed their bullpen by trading for Puk. They conceivably could further bolster the group by acquiring Scott as well. Scott has walked nearly 15% of hitters faced, which is up from his mark of just below 8% last year. However, Scott’s struggles with free passes is closer to his career 13% walk rate. Scott has offset the high number of walks by striking out 28.8% of hitters faced and limiting the home run ball at an elite rate of just 0.40 per nine innings. That has led to a 1.18 ERA in 45.2 innings pitched this season."

MLB trade rumors: What other moves could Diamondbacks make at 2024 MLB trade deadline?

Anthony Franco writes: The D-Backs could look into adding a starting pitcher and/or an offensive upgrade before Tuesday, though a high-leverage reliever has seemed their priority for weeks.

CBS Sports: A.J. Puk trade shows that Diamondbacks are buyers at MLB trade deadline

Dayn Perry writes: "The D-backs were presumed to be on the border between buyer and seller heading toward the July 30 trade deadline. The Puk trade, however, clearly signals that they intend to fortify the roster for another playoff push. The reigning National League champions have little hope of catching the Dodgers in the NL West. However, the NL wild-card race features many teams and a great deal of compression in the standings. Arizona presently has a 53-50 record and are one game behind the Padres for the third and final wild-card spot in the NL. Presently, the National League features nine teams in playoff position or within 5 1/2 games of the final wild-card berth."

MLB.com: Diamondbacks should be all-in at 2024 MLB trade deadline

Anthony Castrovince writes: "In the muddled mess that is the NL Wild Card picture, it’s hard to know which clubs should be pushing their chips to the middle of the table. But we’re singling out the D-backs in that group because of the heavy lifting they already did in the wake of their run to the NL pennant last year. They took a franchise-record payroll into what has been a disappointing 2024 to date. But the possibility for improved health and performance for the rotation in the second half makes the D-backs dangerous."

MLB.com: Diamondbacks need to be buyers at 2024 MLB trade deadline

Steve Gilbert writes: "It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which GM Mike Hazen is not aggressive at the Trade Deadline. For one, it’s not in his nature to be a seller. Secondly, the team opened the year with the highest payroll in franchise history. And as the D-backs showed with last year’s run to the World Series as the third Wild Card team, all you have to do is get into the postseason and anything can happen. With the NL Wild Card race wide open, look for Hazen to be a buyer. Depending on how they feel about how quickly their injured starters will return, the D-backs could look to add a starting pitcher, but they will most certainly try to add to their bullpen, something Hazen has tried to do every year. Another bat might also be a target depending on how third baseman Eugenio Suárez is hitting."

MLB.com: Who could DBacks land at 2024 MLB trade deadline?

Anthony Castrovince writes: "Arizona was aggressive in pursuit of bullpen help last year with the addition of closer Paul Sewald, and it would not be a surprise to see the Snakes active in that area again. Carlos Estévez, Tanner Scott, Michael Kopech and Pete Fairbanks are some of the more notable names that could be available."

PHNX Sports: What would DBacks have to give up in a deal at 2024 MLB trade deadline?

Jesse Friedman writes: "The addition of a third wild card spot in 2022 made it easier to make the MLB postseason. That means that more teams are in contention around the deadline, and fewer teams are looking to sell off pieces in exchange for lower-level prospects. Hazen said that he expects potential trade partners to ask for upper-level, major-league-ready talent, but that he would prefer to trade prospects if he can."
