Arizona Diamondbacks acquire 1B Josh Bell from Miami Marlins

Miami Marlins first baseman Josh Bell (9) hits an RBI single against the Arizona Diamondbacks during the first inning at Chase Field in Phoenix on May 25, 2024.

The Diamondbacks reacted swiftly following Christian Walker’s injury on Monday night, acquiring first baseman Josh Bell from the Miami Marlins in a trade Tuesday morning.

The Diamondbacks are not giving up a player to get Bell but will be on the hook for $2.25 million of his remaining salary. He has roughly $5.5 million left on his $16.5 million salary this year.

Bell is in the midst of a mediocre year but has been swinging the bat well of late. He is 15 for 46 (.326) with six homers in his past 12 games, and he had a streak of four consecutive games with a home run come to an end on Sunday.

Walker exited Monday night’s game with left oblique tightness and underwent an MRI on Tuesday morning. According to a source, the Diamondbacks received a relatively encouraging report on his oblique; it is not considered a severe injury, but Walker is still expected to land on the injured list on Tuesday.
