Plus-size blogger starts #FatAtFashionWeek hashtag to encourage diversity this season
A plus-size model has kick-started the #FatAtFashionWeek hashtag on Instagram to encourage fashion month to embrace curvy women.
Although the runway has arguably grown more diverse in recent years (Rihanna’s celebration of the female body during New York Fashion Week is a well-cited example), there’s still a long way to go until plus-sized women feel recognised.
But fashion blogger Kellie Brown is on a mission to not only change the face of the runway but spotlight the show attendees and street style stars often dismissed by photographers.
In an empowering post, she took to the social media platform to call for change: “I’m starting a new hashtag #fatatfashionweek We are here, we work in this industry, we get it, we are leaders and consumers.”

Within a mere matter of days, Brown’s Instagram page soon amassed over 59,000 followers thanks to its pledge to recognise those who often feel “invisible” at Fashion Week.
Just a handful of posts later, the blogger has already made waves in the industry as she wrote below one post: “This weekends events were so dope! The number of my fat and fly AF friends working and doing amazing things during #nyfw this season has me so full and inspired!”

Last season, the number of plus-size models reportedly declined with just 27 women gracing 8 New York Fashion Week runways.
But if the recent SS19 shows are anything to go by, change is hopefully (albeit slowly) underway with plus-size models walking the runway on behalf of Prabal Gurung while mature models took to the spotlight over at Ralph Lauren.
London Fashion Week is currently hogging the headlines but only time will tell if this season is an accurate representation of all.
