Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding date and venue: All the details revealed
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have finally announced their wedding date.
The royal wedding will take place on Saturday 19 May 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, dispelling rumours that the wedding would take place on a bank holiday weekend.
The couple have chosen a date after the Duchess of Cambridge‘s due date in April, meaning the new royal baby could be one of the guests.
The Archbishop of Canterbury gave a hint as to the church location after saying that Harry and Meghan “had chosen to make their vows to God.”
The royal family have said they will pay for the wedding.
Meghan will be baptised and confirmed to prepare for the religious ceremony and also has the intention of becoming a British citizen.
The Prince’s communications secretary Jason Knauf said Windsor was “a very special place” for Harry, adding that “they will be making sure it reflects who they are as a couple.”
Harry isn’t the first royal to choose not to marry in Westminster Abbey. Prince Charles chose to marry Diana in St Paul’s Cathedral while Prince Edward went for St George’s Chapel. Zara Phillips went further afield, opting for Canongate in Edinburgh.
The 15th century St George’s Chapel will be a more intimate venue for Harry and Meghan. Harry has a personal connection as he was baptised there in 1984.
The Queen and Prince Philip will also welcome the decision as they currently spend a lot of time at Windsor.
The last royal wedding in the chapel took place in 2008 for Harry’s cousin Peter Phillips. Harry’s father Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles had their televised religious blessing there in 2005 after their marriage.
Now, the big question is: what will Meghan wear? While many have pointed to her friend (and matchmaker), designer Misha Nonoo, the Bahrain-born creative doesn’t have any experience with bridal wear.
Other names in the running include Erdem, Elie Saab, Carolina Herrera and Harry’s friend, Victoria Beckham. Although royals are expected to choose a British designer, it’s a possibility that Meghan may decide to honour her American heritage with a US name instead.
Meghan and Harry’s title will not be revealed until their wedding day although royal experts believe that the couple will be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Wedding guests are likely to include political figures including Harry’s friends Barack and Michelle Obama as well as more celebrity names such as Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra and David and Victoria Beckham.
The royal couple announced their engagement at the end of November with a photo call in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace.
There, Meghan showed off her three-stone diamond engagement ring featuring a stone from one of the couple’s favourite locations, Botswana, and two from Princess Diana’s personal jewellery collection.
In their first interview together, the couple spoke about how they met, revealing that Harry proposed over roast chicken in the confines of the royal’s two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage.
The pair will continue to live in the cottage once they are married.
