Why James McAvoy let his Oscars friends deface his shirt
The Oscars offers the A-list pack the perfect opportunity to showcase their signature looks.
Lady Gaga accessorised her McQueen dress with £23 million diamond necklace, while Frances McDormand donned Birkenstocks under her couture Valentino gown and Kendall Jenner wore a loin cloth inspired dress, which left little to the imagination.
James McAvoy, on the other hand, chose to turn his shirt into a living autograph book by getting his celebrity pals to sign it with a bright red Sharpie.
Wearing a Prada suit, the Scottish actor was seen posing for the cameras before he took to the stage to present the award for Best Sound Editing to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with no sign of the signature scribbles.
However, once he’d arrived at the Vanity Fair after party, his crisp, clean, white shirt had been completely defaced and covered in red permanent marker.

Sharing an image of the autographs on Instagram the ‘Split’ star wrote: “Went to the Oscars. Presented. Got mugged by sharpie wielding celebrities. #thuglebrity I’m sure my shirt is going to be defaced by more of these entitled graffiti mentalists as the night goes on.”
The actor also tagged a number of celebrities who had signed his shirt, including Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, Sarah Paulson, Samuel L Jackson and Michael B Jordan among others.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, McAvoy revealed the very cool reason he decided to let his shirt be scribbled on – it’s all for charity.
Revealing that he found a Sharpie in the backstage Green Room, he made the impulsive decision to get his celebrity peers to sign his shirt, with the idea being that he could auction the shirt off to charity.
“I got Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael B. Jordan, I got… who else did we get? I got a lot of people,” he said.
However the actor did say that far from having it all planned in advance, it was a very spur of the moment, “off the cuff” decision.
“It was alcohol-fuelled,” he admitted.
Planned or not-planned we still think it’s a great idea.
