Anne Hathaway reveals why she felt the need to explain her weight gain
Anne Hathaway has spoken out against body shaming after having to deny pregnancy rumours.
The Oscar-winning, ‘Les Miserables’ actress is currently having to put on weight for a new movie role (not yet disclosed), but instead of being able to talk about that role freely, she’s having to deny rumours and justify her changing body.
In a desperate attempt to pre-empt the media storm surrounding her weight gain, Hathaway posted about it via her Instagram a few months ago.
She said: “I’m gaining weight for a movie role and it is going well. To all the people who are going to fat shame me in the upcoming months, it’s not me, it’s you. Peace xx.’

But Hathaway didn’t manage to squash the rumours and now she’s spoken out (again) about the impossible body image scrutiny that faces women in Hollywood.
Speaking to Glamour US, she spoke of her frustration and admitted: “I didn’t feel like dealing with the pregnancy rumours.”
She went onto say: “I find it bizarre that there’s a storm to get ahead of, but I have a history of being shamed and humiliated, for a lot of different reasons.”
Hathaway also spoke out about her continued support for the #TimesUp movement which works to eliminate sexual harassment and the gender power imbalance in Hollywood.

Like many of her fellow female peers in Hollywood, it’ something close to Hathaway’s heart, and sadly something she’s experienced first hand.
She said: “I’ve had a 20-year career and I’ve had some really, really bad experiences, but I’ve had a lot of great ones too — with members of both genders,” she explained. “While they do not begin to approach the atrocious, galling stories others have shared in recent months, I have had negative on-set experiences, some of a sexual nature.
“Some are from the beginning of my career, some are more recent — all are unacceptable.”
She said of her decision to join the #TimesUp movement and speak openly about the campaign:
“Being a 35-year-old cisgendered woman who has experienced the everyday, abusive imbalance of the world also made me want to be a part of a movement for change… I know the world can be far worse for others than it has been to me, but I suppose, like most everyone who has been hurt, I want to protect others from going through the worst of what I experienced.
“I want to help make what I consider the best of my experiences to be the norm, as it always should have been.”
Anne Hathaway is set to shine on the big screen again when her new movie, Ocean’s 8 lands in UK cinemas on 18th June. She stars alongside an impressive female cast, including Sandra Bullock, who Hathaway has struck up a strong friendship with.
Other Ocean’s 8 stars include Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling and Sarah Paulson.
