Report: Saints aren't 'planning for an overhaul' after firing Dennis Allen
You would assume after firing their head coach in the middle of the season and trading away arguably your best defensive player at the trade deadline the New Orleans Saints would be entering into a rebuild. Well, you know what they say about assumptions.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports moving on from Dennis Allen and Marshon Lattimore are not signs of a rebuild. He says New Orleans is not "planning for an overhaul."
The Saints do plan to get younger, but they aren't going full rebuild. Why? Here's what Rapoport had to share on that front:
For one, the Saints philosophically don't believe in blowing it up. They look at other, painful examples around the league of long rebuilds that took far longer than anticipated, some of which required several regimes (i.e. the Browns). There just isn't enough evidence for them that doing so is the best way. The best, most seamless rebuilds (the Eagles after 2020 is an example) include keeping good players, moving on from those with upside-down value, and getting more good players
New Orleans did get younger this offseason, but there's still a good amount of older veterans in key spots. Guys like Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan could be near retirement.
One player who isn't close to retiring is Derek Carr. That'll be the biggest decision they'll make this offseason. How do you move forward with an older quarterback who isn't a part of the Saints' long-term plans? That's a question Mickey Loomis and the next head coach he'll hire must answer.
