Miami Dolphins mailbag: Skylar Thompson or Tyler Huntley? Chris Grier hot seat?
MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins will try to improve to 2-1 with a win in their road opener, at the Seattle Seahawks, on Sunday afternoon.
Miami will need to win without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who had a concussion in the Buffalo loss.

Miami Dolphins Palm Beach Post Mailbag, Week 3
When do you see Tyler Huntley starting for the Dolphins? - @finscastpod
Signing Huntley was an excellent move by the Dolphins. He has starting experience. He's very athletic. He can make off-schedule plays. He's an exciting player who could inject a bolt of energy if it even actually comes to it. That said, the Dolphins kept Thompson as the No. 2 over Mike White for a reason. Miami believes he has command of the offense, mobility and a strong arm. So, to answer your question, Thompson is obviously starting Sunday at Seattle. And unless there is an injury or just a disastrous game or two - which Miami does not expect - it's Thompson's time.
How could this coaching staff and front office with an oft-injured QB think that Skylar Thompson was a solid contingency plan? - @djs2344
The Dolphins have had opportunities to add more experienced backups. They've had an opportunity to add quarterbacks with greater pedigree. McDaniel likes Thompson. McDaniel thinks he can lean on Thompson's strengths, which include mobility. Miami has had very experienced backups for Tua before, such as Jacoby Brissett and Teddy Bridgewater. And there were mixed results. When Miami added Tim Boyle to the practice squad, it was very telling that McDaniel mentioned the chemistry of the quarterback room. Do not underestimate the importance of that from McDaniel and the Dolphins' perspective as they make any quarterback addition decisions.
Oh I have a question. Why does Chris Grier feel he can win a Super Bowl with 3rd string interior offensive lineman? - @mmikel445?
I understand your point about how perhaps Miami should have used a top draft pick on an interior offensive lineman in recent years. Miami, like most teams, thinks tackle is the most important offensive line position. They think Terron Armstead is a Pro Bowler. Injury-prone, yes, but Kendall Lamm is a solid NFL backup and Patrick Paul is an intriguing developmental prospect. And right tackle Austin Jackson has made great strides. Center Aaron Brewer is off to a good start. Perhaps Miami should have had a stronger backup plan for the possibility guard Isaiah Wynn was not ready. Miami just believes they can scheme around interior offensive line deficiencies. They believe money is better spent elsewhere. We'll see if they end up being right. Or wrong.
Why Grier is not on the hot seat? - @edgarro30755172
Grier does seem to have some immunity to criticism from the owners' perspective. But that could always change on a dime. There have been a handful of very big decisions that are directly linked to Grier. If it were to all fall apart, of course Grier might then be held accountable. What would fall apart? Well, the big decisions on things like: Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, offensive line, Jalen Ramsey, Jevon Holland, and, yes, Mike McDaniel. Like it or not, the Dolphins are one of only four teams in the entire league with a winning record in each of the last four seasons: Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers. So - yes, a playoff win is needed here. But, no, the last four seasons have not at all been a disaster. Grier has avoided catastrophe. Most think that's what it would take for a change at that position.
Do you think the overall picture is try to get to Week 7 after the bye for a big push? I.E- Chubb, Wynn, OBJ, Cracraft and possibly Tua. We should pack D and running game week 3 through 5. - @LarryCh57302147
I think the Dolphins need to look at every game as the one they may need to sneak into the AFC Playoffs. On the surface, Miami has a stretch of five winnable games here - at Seattle, Tennessee, at New England, at Indianapolis and Arizona. Anything shy of 3-2 would be disappointing and that's even if Tua misses one, two or three consecutive games. There are always going to be some players who are injured. So there can't be excuses, Yes, of course the addition of Chubb should be beneficial, when it happens. But how much time does he need to ramp up? Same thing for OBJ? We can't expect vintage OBJ in Week 5 or 7 or whenever. And so, yes, Miami needs strong D and a strong run game until Tua is back. But they can't go all-in on run and not remember Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle are still on the roster. Look, the first two weeks have been very challenging for everyone, especially McDaniel. This is an excellent test of McDaniel's mettle.
