No joke: Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier believes in this 53-man roster | Schad

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier knows that a comment he made prior to last season has been thrown around on social media. It's even been recycled as a meme.

"I think you guys are probably more worried than we are," Grier said about Miami's offensive line in April 2023, following an NFL draft day.

The Dolphins haven't drafted an interior offensive lineman in 2023 or 2024, and if the Dolphins flop in their goal to snap a 24-year streak without a playoff win, that may be the reason.

Miami owner Stephen Ross was not joking when he recently said he believes that if healthy, the Dolphins are "certainly a contender for the Super Bowl."

In a meeting with local reporters on Wednesday, Grier did not push back on that notion.

But he did push back on that joke about the spring 2023 comment that has often been referenced whenever a running back has been tackled for loss or a quarterback has been sacked.

"Mike (McDaniel) and I just, we always kind of chuckle," Grier said Wednesday. "I know you guys made a joke about me saying that you guys are more worried about (the offensive line) than we are. But internally, that's how we feel about our group here as a team."

Grier believes in this 53-man roster. Obviously, Ross does. And McDaniel is unfailingly positive.

But Ross' remark about the Super Bowl adds to the pressure that nobody will really ever admit to, and that's OK.

Miami Dolphins news: not shying away from postseason goals

"I don't think we shy away from it," Grier said when asked about the NFL's longest playoff win drought. "Mike's talked about it. For us, it's always, every team wants to win the Super Bowl and we're no different. And at the end of the day, one team wins. And to me, if you don't win it, every team has not had a successful season."

Ross put the Dolphins before the horse when he brought up the Super Bowl even though the team hasn't won a single playoff game since he took control of the team.

And this thing could swing dramatically in one of two ways.

Miami Dolphins 53-man roster strong, GM Chris Grier believes

If such Dolphins as Tua Tagovailoa, Terron Armstead, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Jevon Holland, Jaelan Phillips and Jalen Ramsey stay healthy for all or most of this season, that should result in 10 or more wins and at least one playoff victory.

If the Dolphins' defensive front holds up, slowing the run despite the loss of front-seven players Christian Wilkins, Raekwon Davis, Andrew Van Ginkel and Jerome Baker, that will go a long way toward securing those aforementioned wins.

But if any of Miami's oft-injured players – and this team has had a dramatic increase in 30+ talent – are hurt for key stretches of the season, all bets are off.

And if Miami's defense takes a step back under new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver... and if the interior of Miami's offensive line fails to hold up ...

"It's always interesting because Mike and I were talking about this the other day, that with the offensive line, how every year you guys are like, 'Oh, not good enough, not good enough,' " Grier said. "But then, offensively, we're pretty good offense the last two years."

A quick-passing offense should help mask deficiencies, as Tagovailoa recently referenced.

But if Robert Jones, Aaron Brewer, Liam Eichenberg and Lester Cotton fail as a group, Grier will hear about it again.

There is small margin between 9-8 and 12-5 in the NFL. Everyone knows it.

But Grier thinks he's put together a good roster.

"If we play well consistently, and not just halves and stuff, we feel we can compete with any team in the league," Grier said.

Sooner than later, we'll all have a sense of what this Dolphins roster has ... and doesn't have.

Sooner or later, we'll all put that meme to rest. Or not.
