LSU baseball's Tommy White selected by Oakland Athletics in 2nd round of 2024 MLB Draft

LSU baseball's famed power bat Tommy White was selected by the Oakland Athletics during the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft Sunday night.

Per the MLB Network, White was considered a top-20 prospect in this year's draft after becoming one of the most recognizable and prolific home runs hitters in college baseball the last three seasons, the last two at LSU. White was expected to be selected in the opening round but fell to be the first pick of the second round at No. 40 overall.

The St. Pete Beach, Florida, native was drafted out of IMG Academy three years ago but opted to sign with North Carolina State out of high school. He hit three homers in his first collegiate game, igniting his following and sparking an infamous nickname, "Tommy Tanks."

White cranked 27 homers as a freshman for the Wolkpack then decided to transfer to LSU, where his nickname followed along with his ability. In two seasons in Baton Rouge, the power hitter blasted 48 home runs. He led college baseball in RBIs with 105 during his sophomore season, first year with the Tigers.

Last year, White continued to stay hot, driving in 70 RBIs while scoring 61 runs. His 38 strikeouts in 2024 was the lowest mark of his collegiate career.

MLB teams have been impressed with White's ability to rarely swing and miss, and when that's coupled with his shear power in hitting the baseball and his exit velocity, the LSU star wasn't going to sit on the draft board long. At the next level, White projects to play first base after spending the last two seasons playing third as well as batting some designated hitter here and there.
