LSU baseball star Paul Skenes makes MLB history as No. 1 draft pick selected to All-Star Game

Paul Skenes continues to make history in The Show.

The former LSU Tigers pitcher and No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft was selected to the National League All-Star Team on Sunday, adding to an impressive and phenomenal rookie campaign with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

According to USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale, Skenes is the first No. 1 overall pick to be named an All-Star a year after being drafted in MLB history — not bad for Skenes, who spent just one season in Baton Rouge after starting his career at Air Force.

The 6-foot-6 right-hander learned of his selection to the Midsummer Classic on Sunday by Pirates manager Derek Shelton in front of his teammates inside the clubhouse.

"This is a special game. This is a special thing to be a part of," Shelton said.

Skenes added: "I don't know, this is cool. And I'm just grateful for all of you guys. Since the first day I've been here, I've been part of the team. I couldn't have done it without you guys."

The 22-year-old Skenes has taken the big leagues by storm since his call-up on May 8. In his latest start Friday against the Mets, Skenes struck out eight across seven innings while giving up two runs on four hits. It was the ninth time in his first 10 outings that he recorded seven or more strikeouts, which set an MLB record for most within a pitcher's first 10 career games.

Skenes will head to Arlington, Texas, as one of two players representing the Pirates, joining outfielder Bryan Reynolds, who is making his second appearance. Skenes is one of 32 players making their first all-star trip, one in which he reportedly could be in the mix to start.
