FSU football practice takeaways: What QBs Brock Glenn, Luke Kromenhoek are working on
All eyes were on the Florida State football quarterbacks during Tuesday's practice.
With starter DJ Uiagalelei sidelined for a few weeks due to a finger injury, backups Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek have an opportunity to step in and compete.
"I've been pleased with how those guys prepared each and every week leading up because you never know when the opportunity will present itself," FSU coach Mike Norvell said.
"Obviously, the door is open is now, and excited to see them go through it."
Coming off a devastating 42-16 loss at SMU last Saturday, FSU is at home Saturday against No. 15 Clemson at 7 p.m. on ESPN at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Glenn is projected to start in place of Uiagalelei. The redshirt freshman received significant snaps on the first day of installation.
Here are some takeaways from Tuesday's practice.
Brock Glenn must work on ball placement, anticipation
According to Norvell, Glenn had a solid day leading the first-team of offense. In the beginning, he took command in communicating during pre-snaps and checkdowns during 11-on-11.
"I thought he made some good decisions, and I thought he had some things that we had to go back and correct in the film," Norvell said.
At first, Glenn missed some throws, especially with sophomore receiver Hykeem Williams. He would come over to talk to Glenn, likely talking about where he likes the ball to be placed.
Glenn started to find some rhythm later in practice when he connected with wide receiver Malik Benson.
Norvell wants Glenn to improve on his timing and anticipation. After practice, he explained that he must trust his eyes and not second guess his reads.
"It's all about you trusting the timining, the technique fundamentals because there's time that you might see it and you might anticipate what's happening, but if you're almost too quick with your timing, it takes time for the receiver to get to the spot or things to happen," Norvell said.
Luke Kromenhoek looks sharps on deep throws
At the beginning, Kromenhoek threw one interception during red zone drils. Linebacker AJ Cottrill caught the pick. Outside of that, he has made good throws downfield.
During 1-on-1s, Darion Williamson beat Safety Shyheim Brown and Kromenhoek connected with an accurate deep ball pass. One of Kromenheoek's best throws was to freshman and Tallahassee native Micahi Danzy on a throw-down field.
He also connected on an aggressive throw to tight end Brian Courtney in the middle of the field.
Mike Norvell wants FSU football to focus on being aggressive on both sides. Strong day for the secondary
This week, Norvell wants the Seminoles to focus on playing aggressively. For offense, he wants to own the possession. FSU is ranked in the bottom tier on offense, averaging 15.6 points a game and 278.6 total yards a game.
"We got to make sure we own the ball as an offense," Norvell said.
"We got to take what they are giving us. We have to be aggressive. We're going to do the things that we can to impact the game and we have to make sure we're owning the possession."
Defensively, Norvell also emphasized turnovers, hoping to create more opportunities for the offense.
The secondary had a productive practice. Cornerback Azareye'h Thomas was locking receivers down during 1-on-1s and also had a sack.
Earl Little Jr, who recently converted to safety, broke up a few passes that were intended for tight end Amaree Williams. Safety KJ Kirkland also had a good day, breaking up a few passes, including to freshman tight end Landen Thomas.
