Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians ALDS Game 1 score: Game recap, highlights

The Detroit Tigers were shut down in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

The Tigers were shut out 7-0 by the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday. The Guardians jumped all over Tyler Holton and Reese Olson in the first inning for a big lead before Detroit recorded an out, while the Tigers' offense couldn't crack starter Tanner Bibee or relievers Cade Smith, Tim Herrin and Emmanuel Clase. The Guardians added two insurance runs in the sixth inning to push the lead to 7-0.

Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians Game 1 game recap, highlights

End 8th: Tigers offense quiet, trail Guardians 7-0

Jake Rogers drew a leadoff walk off Tim Herrin, but Hunter Gaddis came out of Cleveland's bullpen to shut down the inning with a double play from Kerry Carpenter. Keider Montero gave up a double to Brayan Rocchio, but closed out a second scoreless inning by striking out Kyle Manzardo.

End 7th: Tigers go down 1-2-3 again, trailing Guardians 7-0

The massive comeback looks very unlikely.

The Tigers' offense was shut down again, this time by left-handed Tim Herrin, for another 1-2-3 inning with no threat of scoring. Keider Montero came into the game to soak up outs in the blowout and had a 1-2-3 inning himself with strikeouts against Andres Gimenez and Jhonkensy Noel.

End 6th: Cleveland adds two runs, Smith strikes out side; Tigers trailing 7-0

Ty Madden came on to relieve Reese Olson and get out of his first postseason inning unscathed. David Fry came out on top in an eight-pitch battle and hooked a slider down the left field line for a two-run double after Madden put two on base with walks. Sean Guenther then came on to end the scoring there.

The Tigers are faring worse against Cade Smith. The right-handed flamethrower out of the bullpen has struck out four Detroit batters in a row. He got Matt Vierling to chase a low sweeper, Riley Greene to swing over a splitter and Colt Keith to miss on a 97.4 mph fastball.

End 5th: Reese Olson hurls another 1-2-3 inning; Tigers trailing 5-0

It may be too late, but Reese Olson has settled into a nice rhythm. He produced a second straight 1-2-3 inning on seven pitches with a Josh Naylor groundout, Lane Thomas flyout and Andres Gimenez groundout. Olson has recorded nine straight outs.

Bibee was pulled from the game after a Parker Meadows single with two outs, but Cade Smith struck out Kerry Carpenter on an outside fastball to end the inning. Bibee threw 4⅔ scoreless innings with four hits allowed, one walk and six strikeouts.

End 4th: Tigers can't capitalize with 2 on, no outs; Trailing Guardians 5-0

For the first time, the Tigers got the Guardians out in order. Steven Kwan flew out to center on a hard hit followed by a David Fry groundout to first and a Jose Ramirez flyout to right.

The Tigers put two on base with no outs thanks to a Riley Greene single and Colt Keith walk, but Spencer Torkelson ground into a double play and Zach McKinstry ground out to end the threat. Bibee is at 68 pitches with three hits allowed, one walk and five strikeouts through four innings.

End 3rd: Tigers offense goes down 1-2-3; Guardians lead 5-0

Olson started the inning with a hit by pitch, but responded by striking out Jhonkensy Noel with a fastball at the knees and Bo Naylor on an outside changeup. Andres Gimenez stole second with two outs, but Brayan Rocchio ground out the first to end the inning.

The Tigers went down quietly in the top of the order's second time up. Parker Meadows popped out, Kerry Carpenter struck out on a high fastball and Matt Vierling ground out to second base.

End 2nd: Olson escapes jam, Bibee strikes out three; Tigers trail Guardians 5-0

The Guardians seemed primed for another big inning, but Reese Olson struck out Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas on changeups to end the inning with two on base. Steven Kwan started the inning with a walk, followed by a David Fry single, but Olson got three straight outs against the heart of Cleveland's order, starting with a flyout to center from Jose Ramirez.

Tanner Bibee worked around a Zach McKinstry double by striking out the side in the top of the inning. Spencer Torkelson worked a 3-0 count, but couldn't connect on two fastballs, Trey Sweeney missed on a changeup and Jake Rogers missed a slider above the zone. Bibee has four strikeouts with two hits allowed through one turn of the Tigers' lineup.

End 1st: Guardians knock around Holton and Olson for 5-0 lead

Tyler Holton was pulled after giving up two runs before recording an out in the bottom of the first. Steven Kwan hit a leadoff double off the right field wall, followed by a David Fry walk in a 3-2 count. José Ramírez then hit a sharp grounder right over the third base bag and Zach McKinstry mishandled the big hop, allowing a run to score on the fielding error and Josh Naylor drove in a second run with a single to right. Reese Olson came into the game then but hung a slider to Lane Thomas, who promptly crushed a three-run home run to left field.

The Tigers made Tanner Bibee work early, but the Guardians starter got out of the first unscathed after throwing 27 pitches. Kerry Carpenter reached on a one-out single to center and Riley Greene took a curveball off the toe to put two on base, but Colt Keith lined out to left fielder Steven Kwan to end the threat.

Pregame notes

The Tigers lived the highs and lows of a playoff baseball series all in two games and came out on top to advance to the ALDS. Tarik Skubal delivered a Game 1 win that the bullpen held onto late despite the Astros' best effort, and a collective team effort capped off by Andy Ibáñez's three-run double in the top of the eighth inning to seal the 5-2 Game 2 win and the series.

MORE: Tigers don't have a great offense, but they have a 3-headed secret weapon

The Guardians have had a full week off since their season ended last Saturday. The AL Central champions finished 92-69 and held a firm lead over the Royals, Tigers and Twins over the second half of the season. José Ramírez, a noted thorn in the Tigers' side for the last decade, delivered another award-worthy season at third base, hitting .279 with 39 home runs, 119 RBIs and 41 stolen bases. The Guardians dealt with a makeshift rotation past Bibee with the best bullpen in baseball. Guardians relievers led the majors with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.051 WHIP, while Tigers relievers were fifth in ERA (3.55) and second in WHIP (1.135).

The Guardians won the season series 7-6, though all of those games took place July 30 or earlier, before the Tigers' late surge. The Tigers outscored the Guardians, 60-50, and lost five games by one run.
