Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians predictions: Will the Roar of '24 continue?

The Detroit Tigers, fresh off their stunning sweep of the Houston Astros in the American League wild-card series, will look to continue their unlikely run in the MLB postseason with an ALDS matchup against the Cleveland Guardians, beginning Saturday.

The Guardians won the season series, 7-6, but the two teams haven't played since Cleveland's victory on July 30, a few hours after the MLB trade deadline passed. A little less than two weeks later, the Tigers began a 34-13 run to make up 10 games in the wild-card race and earn the franchise's first playoff berth in a decade.

Can the Tigers pull off a similar upset of the AL Central champs, who've had the week to rest up? Four Free Press sports writers have some thoughts on the topic:

SCOUTING THE SERIES: Who has ALDS advantage?

Shawn Windsor

The Tigers like to come from behind. Well, maybe they don’t like to, but they’re certainly not afraid to. That will work against Cleveland as long as it doesn’t involve the 9th inning. Stay away from Emmanuel Clase and his 100-mph cutter and the Tigers should be good. Besides, who am I to pick against this team at this point? If a team gets on a ride that’s hard to fully explain, it’s best not to question it. Also, this is still only a best-of-five series, and that seems manageable for AJ his merry band of bullpen pitchers. The pick: Tigers in 5.

When you use this many young pitchers, at some point, somebody is going to have an off day. And Cleveland could put up a big number in a game. But the Tigers have been playing playoff type baseball for so long, nothing is gonna phase them. Give the Tigers a win in a Skubal start. Or maybe two on short rest. The pick: Tigers in 4.

It’s so hard to pick against the red-hot Tigers right now, and if this series wasn’t against a division opponent, I would pick them. But the Guardians know the Tigers too well and won’t be surprised by their "pitching chaos." They’re also rested and kick it off with two games at home, where they had the best record in the AL. Tarik Skubal won't start Game 1 on short rest, leaving the Tigers hoping they get a Game 5 start from him following Game 2. The pick: Guardians in 5.

This matchup is closer than it seems seeding-wise. We’ve got the squads each taking six categories, with one push. The regular-season series bore that out — the Guardians took seven of 13 games … but five of those wins came by one run, and two came in extra innings. And that’s where the Guardians will have the final edge, even with Skubal getting a Game 5 start: Cleveland walks it off at Progressive Field, leaving the Tigers vowing to win the AL Central next year. The pick: Guardians in 5.
