Colt McCoy among a dozen new inductees into Texas Athletics Hall of Honor

Nearly 14 years after his No. 12 jersey was retired by the Texas football program, former quarterback Colt McCoy will again be honored by the university.

It was announced Tuesday that McCoy will soon be inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor. McCoy played at UT from 2005-09 and was the starting quarterback for four of those seasons.

When it comes to the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor, McCoy will headline a 12-person class that includes fellow football standouts Marquise Goodwin and Alex Okafor. Omar Quintanilla (baseball), Julie Cooper Bliemel (women's swimming & diving), Farley Taylor Lansing (women's tennis) and Karen Nelson Walters (women's track and field), who all helped lead Texas to NCAA championships, are also being inducted alongside Mira Topic Losert, the volleyball program's all-time leader in kills, Reggie Freeman, the No. 4 scorer in the history of the men's basketball program, and All-American softball player Lexy Bennett Skaggs.

Current UT men's golf coach John Fields and Carie Graves, the first-ever coach of the Texas rowing program who died in 2021, will join the Hall of Honor as special selections.

The newest inductees into the Texas Hall of Honor will be celebrated at an on-campus ceremony Sept. 20. They will then be recognized during UT's football game against ULM the following day.

Colt McCoy compiled a 45-8 record as UT's quarterback, and the two-time Heisman Trophy finalist led the Longhorns to the BCS championship game during the 2009 season. He'll enter the Texas Hall of Honor on Sept. 20.

McCoy compiled a 45-8 record as UT's quarterback, and the two-time Heisman Trophy finalist led the Longhorns to the BCS championship game during the 2009 season. He remains the all-time leader at Texas in passing yards and passing touchdowns. During the 2010 season, McCoy became the sixth UT football player to have his jersey retired.

All of that is to say, why wasn't McCoy already in the Texas Hall of Honor?

The reasoning behind McCoy's delayed entrance into the Hall of Honor is actually quite simple. Hall of Honor rules stipulate that athletes aren't eligible for induction until 10 years have passed since their last competition at Texas. Since McCoy was still playing professionally when his 10-year window closed, his induction was pushed back even further so he could attend the celebratory weekend. McCoy officially announced Monday that he was retiring after a 13-year NFL career.
