Following an impressive win to start the 2024 campaign on Monday Night Football against the New York Jets, the San Francisco 49ers posted a dud in their second game of the season. The 49ers dropped a 23-17 tough loss to the Minnesota Vikings with an underwhelming performance in their first trip on the road in the 2024 season.

While Brock Purdy threw for 319 yards and Jordan Mason rushed for another 100 yards, it wasn't enough to slow down Sam Darnold, Justin Jefferson and the Vikings on Sunday in Minnesota.

Here good and the bad from the 49ers' underwhelming loss to the Vikings in Week 2.

Bad: Special Teams

While Jake Moody picked up where he left off from last week, the rest of the 49ers' special teams struggled against the Vikings on Sunday. Starting with a blocked punt on Mitch Wishnowsky. The 49ers punt coverage allowed CJ Ham top fly up the middle and block Wishnowsky's punt. Wishnowsky was then slow to react to the block, allowing the Vikings to advance the ball down near the red zone.

Adding to the 49ers' poor performance was a muffed punt from rookie Jacob Cowing. Cowing was arguably one of the most impressive rookies during the preseason. However, his regular-season campaign got off to a shaky start. While Isaac Yiadom was able to recover the fumble, Cowing's mishap on the return spoke to the sloppiness of the 49ers' performance on special teams.

Good: Jordan Mason

For the second straight week, former backup running back Jordan Mason served as one of the most consistent weapons in the 49ers' offense. Mason racked up another 100-yard rushing performance with a touchdown against the Vikings. On 20 carries, Mason rushed for 5.0 yards per carry in Week 2.

Bad: Kyle Shanahan vs. Brian Flores

The 49ers offense looked clunky on Sunday. Outside of their impressive 99-yard drive in the fourth quarter, Kyle Shanahan's group looked out of sync. Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores seemed to have Shanahan's number on Sunday.

With multiple disguised coverages and a flurry of different blitzes, Shanahan didn't seem to have an answer for Flores' defensive scheme on Sunday.

Good: Deebo Samuel

While the 49ers' passing attack felt relatively quiet on Sunday, it was Deebo Samuel who consistently provided a spark when Brock Purdy needed someone to lean on.

Samuel caught eight passes for 110 yards on Sunday. Beyond what the box score says, most of Samuel's yards came on tough catches that required toe-tapping footwork on the sideline or stretched-out arms over the middle of the field.

Through two games, Purdy's connection with Samuel looks at mid-season form.

Bad: Third and Fourth Downs

Offensively, the game was probably lost on third and fourth down conversions. After converting six-of-13 third downs on Monday night against the Jets, the 49ers struggled mightily on third down against Brian Flores and the Vikings.

On Sunday, the 49ers only converted two of 10 attempts on third down against the Vikings. When it came to fourth down, the 49ers picked up their first fourth down conversation, but came up short on the next two, including a stop at the goal line.

Good: Fred Warner

The best player in red and gold on Sunday was All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner. Along with leading the team in tackles and recording a sack, Warner came up with a pair of clutch plays to keep the 49ers in the game.

With the Vikings knocking on the door of 49ers red zone, Warner jumped a pass from Sam Darnold to secure a timely interception. Coming off of Warner's interception, Purdy led a drive down the field to score a touchdown before halftime.

At the end of the third quarter, the Vikings were threatening again. Darnold found Aaron Jones for a short pass that the running back scampered down to the goal line to potentially make the game 27-7. However, a clutch tackle from Warner forced a fumble that the 49ers were able to recover on the one-yard line.

Again, the 49ers were able to put together a long 99-yard touchdown drive off of Warner's forced turnover.

Bad: Offensive Line

After shining in Week 1, the 49ers offensive line came down to earth on Sunday in Minnesota. Along with giving up consistent pressure, the 49ers offensive line gave up six sacks to the Vikings. Pat Jones II recorded a pair of sacks against Brock Purdy with Jonathan Greenard, Blake Cashman and Andre Van Ginkel all notching a single sack.
