Wife debates divorce after husband insists on naming baby after his ex
A pregnant woman is considering divorce from her husband of two years because he is set on naming their unborn baby daughter after his ex-girlfriend.
Taking to Reddit, the woman asked fellow users whether the situation seemed ‘normal’ in a thread entitled: “Divorce on table because husband and I cant agree on baby’s name”.
She wrote: “I got pregnant like 7 months ago so recently we started discussing name for the baby. Ever since we found out its gonna be a girl my husband wants to name it like his exes name.
“It’s not any ex but the one he dated for long period of time and loved the most.” [sic]
She explained that her husband’s former partner had caused problems in the relationship but subsequently moved away. However, the relationship problems had emerged again thanks to the husband’s wish to name the child after his ex.
“Now he made it clear that he wants the baby to have that name and I can name the second child. He doesn’t understand how much its affecting me and keeps saying it’s just the hormones.”
Many Reddit users supported the woman’s outrage at what her partner wished to do.
One wrote: “I knew a woman who wanted to name her baby after an ex. She ended up stabbing the current bf. Just putting that out there.”
Another said it pointed to a disturbing trend: “Why is this so common?? I keep reading story after story about dads who named their kids after their exes! CREEPY, DUDES. CUT THAT SHIT OUT.”
Worryingly, several others weighed in with their own stories of being named after their parents’ former partners.
One said: “My dad named me after his ex before my mother. My name makes me sick to my stomach still at 33….”
Similarly, a user wrote: “This happened to my friend! Her first name was someone her dad loved before he met her mom. Unsurprisingly her parents divorced and she actually goes by her middle name now.”
Amid these somewhat depressing experiences, one person shared a romantic story of how their parents chose their name.
They wrote: “That’s brutal. My parents weren’t supposed to be dating when they were in the army, so my dad used a fake name in letters to my mom and that ended up being my name.”
While many of us know not to call our offspring after former romantic partners, experts have predicted some rather unusual baby name trends for the coming year. Predictions include everything from retro names from eras gone by to the characters of ‘Killing Eve’ (‘Welcome to the world baby Villanelle’).
