Student's powerful anti-Trump photo series sums up 2017
This time last year, a student from Oregon hit headlines for her powerful (and brave) photo series that used a simple concept to speak out against Donald Trump.
19-year-old Aria Watson enlisted a group of women to pose naked for her, writing Trump’s most sexist comments across their bodies.
The series, called #SignedByTrump, was started before Trump won the election but went viral shortly after he officially became President.
“As a proud feminist, hearing Trump say ‘grab them by the p***y’ and talk about how he could do anything he wanted made me absolutely sick,” the budding photographer told Marie Claire in 2016.
“The fact that he has said this, and other things like this, but still won is what scares me. I’m afraid that words, and even actions, like this will become a social norm.”
“To everyone who has supported me and #SignedByTrump, don’t let anyone silence you. Don’t be afraid to speak up about what you are passionate about.”
As we come to the end of a year that’s been full of sexual harassment allegations aimed at some of the world’s most powerful men, it seems apt to revisit the series and hope that in 2018, it won’t be quite so relevant.
