Genius skincare calendar reveals when you're likely to get spots - and how to avoid them
The 28-day menstrual cycle that we go through each and every month can wreak havoc on our skin.
We’re well aware that period time equals breakout time and no amount of face mask application can stop it.
But what if there was a way to work out exactly what your skin will be doing and when?
Neal’s Yard Remedies’ latest Beauty Book contains an incredibly useful calendar that’ll teach you everything about skincare including when to apply masks and serums, when to exercise and when to just leave your skin alone.
Let’s start with the three stages.
Greasy and acne-prone
The first – the spotty stage – begins in the week leading up to your period as well as during it. Oil production is at an all-time high, leading to the chance of more spots. You need to be extra meticulous when cleansing to ensure all the dirt and sebum is removed.
And although you will groan on reading this, exercising during this time is good to encourage sweating and further clean out those pores.
Other top tips include avoiding eating greasy foods and slathering on clay face masks to purify the skin.
Dry
Next up is the dry stage. This is where you will start to notice dry and flaky patches. Experts recommend drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and gently exfoliating to get rid of all those dead skin cells.
Skin can also become more irritated during this period to avoid intense facials and products. Instead, go for things with calming properties such as green tea and aloe vera and invest in a vitamin C serum to give your skin that all-important glow.
Normal and glowing
Lastly, we enter the best part of the month: the healthy and happy stage. Skin should be at its clearest during this time so this is your chance to wear as little make-up as possible.
However, those who suffer with premenstrual syndrome may experience oilier skin and therefore a few more spots. To combat this, take up some gentle exercise like yoga.
It’s also handy to understand your skin’s daily cycle.
Mornings are the worst time to apply rich masks and serums as your skin will struggle to absorb any important ingredients.
By midday, you may find certain skin conditions such as psoriasis have worsened. This is because skin cell renewal is at its lowest, leading to increased irritation. You may also find that your face looks a little shiny thanks to lots of oil production.
4pm is the optimal absorption time so get applying all those face masks.
The evening, meanwhile, is the perfect time for a warm bath or sauna as your pores will be more open. Make sure to apply a heavy moisturiser before bed as water loss is at its highest during the night.
