Plus size blogger hits back at trolls who say she doesn't 'deserve' her boyfriend

A plus size blogger has hit back at cruel trolls who criticised her size and suggested her weight meant she didn’t “deserve” her boyfriend.

Despite it being 2018, it seems the Internet still has an awful lot to say about other people’s relationships. Just ask Melissa Gibson.

The blogger and body positive advocate regularly shares empowering photos to try and encourage others to embrace their bodies.

On 31 December, she posted a sweet snapshot of her and her boyfriend, Johnathon about to kiss as they rung in the New Year.

While the post should only have attracted comments wishing the couple well, instead it was littered with nasty one-liners ranging from those saying the couple didn’t look right together, to others suggesting that Melissa did not deserve Johnathan. Er, what?

Thankfully Melissa was well up to the task of responding. Sharing a second image of the couple together, the blogger took it upon herself to give the trolls a few home truths.

“When taking a picture in a sparkly dress next to the man you love makes people comment about your body, question your relationship, make judgements about him for loving you,” the accompanying caption began.

“Our relationship is political. Even though we both know how natural and right it feels. And if the world won’t just let us be, we will keep fighting for our love, for our space, for our right to be seen, accepted without question, and celebrated.”

“In all honesty, it’s silly to think it bothers people so much, but when privileged people base their value on attraction and relationships, it results in the plethora of relationships that look like mine being erased and delegitimized,” Melissa continued.

“Like somehow I don’t deserve him or our love isn’t real. We are exactly what each other wants, and guess what, our bodies are a part of that. It’s not an abnormality or a fetish. It’s simply natural. So while you insist on yelling your insecurities and bigotry at me, realize I’m not playing the game you play any longer. I’m not playing by your rules. And it’s honestly sad you still are.”

Speaking to Café Mom Melissa explained that she thinks people find it hard to understand that attraction comes in different shapes and sizes. “I think people feel entitled because there is a sense that attraction is tied only to bodies that fit within a certain mold, one that my body does not fit into, but my partner’s does,” she says.

Melissa went on to say that she hopes 2018 would be the year that love isn’t defined by weight, age, ability, gender or sexuality.

Let’s hope it’s also the year that the trolls get a life.
