People aren't happy that Ivanka Trump tweeted her support for Oprah Winfrey

For some reason no one can fathom Ivanka Trump tweeted about Oprah Winfrey’s speech and it has not gone down well with the Internet.

ICYMI at Sunday night’s 75th annual Golden Globe Awards women across the industry stood in solidarity against sexual misconduct, which was rounded off with Oprah giving a rousing speech while accepting an award for overall brilliance.

After becoming the first black woman to win the Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement award, she declared: “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!”

She went on to speak about the women who stood up in defiance of sexual harassment:

“And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, ‘Me too’ again.”

Of course everyone gave a metaphorical (and literal) round of applause. Including, it seems, the daughter of the current US president Donald Trump.

Taking to Twitter on Monday evening Ivanka Trump tweeted her support of Oprah’s speech: “Just saw ‪@Oprah’s empowering & inspiring speech at last night’s #GoldenGlobes. Let’s all come together, women & men, & say #TimesUp ‪#United.”

Unsurprisingly, Twitter was mightily unimpressed with Ivanka’s comments, for pretty obvious reasons, but just in case you’ve been living under a rock we’ll explain.

The #MeToo movement Oprah referred to in her speech kicked off following the Harvey Weinstein scandal, wherein thousands of women around the world came forward to stand together as survivors of sexual harassment.

And the #TIMESUP hashtag that Ivanka used in her tweet refers to Time’s Up, an initiative started by women in Hollywood as a way to combat sexual harassment in the industry and throughout the rest of the world.

The thing is though that despite denying the claims over a dozen women have accused Ivanka Trump’s father of a variety of sexual misconduct. And let’s not forget the untold sexist comments women have been protesting.

There’s also the fact that Oprah’s speech was, in certain parts, implicitly critical of Ivanka’s father and his administration.

“I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because we all know the press is under siege these days,” Oprah said. “We also know it’s the insatiable dedication to uncovering the absolute truth that keeps us from turning a blind eye to corruption and to injustice.”

Then there’s the fact that people are now widely calling for Oprah to run for president.

Unsurprisingly people took it upon themselves to point all this out to Ivanka.

“NO! Nobody get to play both sides!!!!!!! Stop it!” one user tweeted.

“But…your dad?” another pointed out.

“Do you guys want to tell her, or should I?” another user joked.

Even celebs responded to Ivanka’s tweet.

“Great! You can make a lofty donation to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund that is available to support your father’s accusers,” Alyssa Milano, who originally kick-started the #MeToo movement commented.

While Chrissy Teigen had a simple yet scathing response.

“ew go away,” she wrote.

It isn’t the first time Ivanka’s social media use has backfired.

Late last year, the first daughter tweeted out a belated congratulations to the newly engaged Prince Harry and Meghan, to which people were quick to accuse her of attempting to fish for an invite to the royal wedding.

We’re guessing her dad won’t be retweeting her any time soon.
