No one noticed that Barack Obama wore the same tux for eight years - and Michelle's not happy
Sexism is still rife in the world of politics. And in the world of fashion reporting too, according to former First Lady Michelle Obama.
She revealed that her husband, former President Barack Obama, had worn the same tuxedo for eight years’ worth of state dinners.
Yet not one person had noticed.
Speaking at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on Tuesday, Michelle commented on how the media had scrutinised her outfits at the high-profile events.
“This is the unfair thing. People take pictures of the shoes I wear, the bracelets, the necklace – they didn’t comment that for eight years, [Barack] wore the same tux, same shoes,” she said.
“And he was proud of it too,” the 53-year-old political figure continued. “He’s like, ‘I’m ready. I’m ready in ten minutes. How long did it take you?’ I’m like, ‘Get out of here.'”
This double standard revelation isn’t surprising considering the level of criticism female stars receive for their wardrobe choices.
The former First Lady has experienced this since the beginning of her husband’s term. In 2009, she was condemned for having bare arms in her official White House photograph.
Michelle was known for choosing stand-out looks at the annual state dinners. For her last one in 2016, she chose a sequinned rose gold Versace gown.
At the conference, she also discussed the lack of women in the tech industry, adding: “We still have a long way to go on equality and access. We have to teach young girls they are smart and can compete.”
