This mum wants to change 10-month-old baby's name because it doesn't 'work well' anymore

Some parents spend weeks, or even months carefully picking out the perfect baby name for their child – but what if, after some time, a parent simply decides the name wasn’t the right fit to begin with? One mum recently opened up about this very dilemma on parenting forum Mumsnet.

“DD (dear daughter) was born on Halloween (2016) and I named her Autumn. I really like the look of it and the sound of it in my head. But since using it as a name, it doesn’t seem to work as well as it did in my head.”

The woman explains that a lot of people simply “don’t get the name,” but her mother in particular appears to have some concern.

“My mum actually makes jokes about it — ‘I can’t wait to see my granddaughter who hasn’t got a proper name,’ or she speaks directly to her and says ‘you might as well have been named ‘Season.’ No one else really says anything, but I feel like they think the same. I’m just really close to my mum, so she probably feels like she can say it.”

Although the responses varied, the common consensus was that the grandmother was, quite bluntly, being rude.

“Autumn is an absolutely fine name! It’s not stupid or even that unusual,” wrote @Jooni, noting that it was the 148th most popular name in 2015. “It probably seems odd to your mum because it wasn’t widely used when she was naming babies, but times change, she’s had her turn, and now it’s yours. Change it only if you want to – it’s not your mum’s place to pressure you into doing and I think it’s incredibly rude, insensitive and underhand of her to make those kind of comments!”

While a few didn’t particularly like the name, they don’t believe the mum should be faulted for it.

“I don’t like the name, but I also don’t think you should change it based on your mother’s rudeness and the opinions of internet strangers!” Commented @IndianaMoleWoman.

More than a few noted that there are a few famous people named Autumn.

“Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s baby daughter is called Autumn, so it’s pretty, and the name will likely gain popularity now,” wrote @RandomUsernameHere. “If you’re worried about it being unusual. I think it’s a lovely name though.”
