The most popular destinations for a Christmas getaway in the UK for 2020, according to TripAdvisor
It’s safe to say 2020 has been a rather unusual year. While international travel was put on hold indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, this past summer saw a stark rise in staycations as Brits flocked to remote parts of the UK to take a break.
It seems we’re about to see a return of this mass exodus as TripAdvisor has released its Winter Travel Index, pinpointing the most popular destinations in the UK for a Christmas getaway.

According to the travel review site, Whitby, Inverness, Bowness, Torquay and Windermere are the fastest recovering domestic destinations for Christmas getaways in 2020, based on year-on-year demand.
It reports that these destinations were popular over the summer months as well and that we can expect to see the nature activity trend continue too, as 51% of travellers say they want to have an ‘outdoors trip’ sometime in the next three months.
More than a fifth of the 799 Brits surveyed by TripAdvisor said they are planning on travelling for the Christmas holidays this year - a sharp drop compared to the 48% who said they travelled for the festive season in 2019.

Just under half of the respondents (42%) said they feel safe to travel over the December holidays, while 33% said they didn’t feel it was safe.
For their next trip, 43% of UK respondents said they would like to travel somewhere where they can support local businesses too.

While most Brits are staying put, those who are curious about an international holiday are looking towards the Canary Islands in Spain. TripAdvisor found that, based on accommodation searches for check-in dates over the Christmas period, Tenerife was the most popular international destination for Brits this winter.
