Michelle Obama is still facing racism after the White House
Michelle Obama has admitted that she still faces racism despite being America’s first black First Lady.
The 53-year-old, who handed over the reins to Melania Trump in January of this year, spoke on stage at the Women’s Foundation of Colorado’s 30th anniversary celebration.
She was asked several hard-hitting questions about the struggles she had to overcome as a black woman in politics and which pieces of “falling glass” had cut her the deepest when she broke the racial glass ceiling.
“The shards that cut me the deepest were the ones that intended to cut,” she replied. “Knowing that after eight years of working really hard for this country, there are still people who won’t see me for what I am because of my skin colour.”
“Women, we endure those cuts in so many ways that we don’t even notice we’re cut. We are living with small tiny cuts, and we are bleeding every single day, and we’re still getting up.”
The conversation took a more positive note when the political style icon revealed that she and her husband – former president Barack Obama – will remain firmly in the public eye. Although there have been rumours that Michelle will run for president in the future, she simply stated that “public service and engagement will be a part of my life and my husband’s life forever.”
Michelle, who was wearing a pink floral dress, also took the time to comment on America’s current political climate, noting that things in the country may seem scary under Donald Trump but it’s important to remember that the American people have a good heart and soul.
“The people in this country are universally good and kind and honest and decent,” she commented. “Don’t be afraid of the country you live in. The folks here are good.”
