Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, wasn’t by his daughter’s side during the birth of the royal baby boy on Monday morning. But shortly after hearing the news from across the pond, Thomas made a statement about the arrival of his sixth grandchild.
“I am proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I am sure that he will grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honor,” he told The Sun. “God bless the child and I wish him health and happiness, and my congratulations to my lovely daughter Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry, and God save the Queen.”
The 74-year-old has reportedly been keeping a low profile while residing in Rosarito, Mexico.
The duchess and her father have had a strained relationship since he failed to make it to the royal wedding nearly one year ago because of health reasons. According to an interview that Thomas did with Good Morning Britain, he has since tried to make amends with his daughter and says that his pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
Still, he shared in his latest statement that he’s “delighted to hear that mother and child are doing well.”
According to statements from The Royal Family Twitter account, Meghan was joined by her mother, Doria Ragland, during the birth.
