Meghan Markle won't be meeting President Trump during state visit

President Donald Trump and his family will be arriving in London on Monday 3 June for his first state visit to the UK. He previously visited the country in July 2018 and had tea with the Queen, but the trip wasn’t an official state visit.

While Donald and wife Melania will meet the Queen and most of the senior members of the Royal Family, there’s one person who won’t be present for any of the lunches or state banquet - the Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan, 37, has a good excuse for bowing out of the engagements. The former ‘Suits’ star gave birth to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on May 6 and is currently on maternity leave.

Husband Harry, 34, will join President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump and his grandmother, the Queen for a private lunch during the state visit on Monday.

Meghan’s previously spoken of her dislike of Trump. Before the US election took place in November 2016, Meghan described him as ‘misogynistic’ and ‘divisive’ in a TV interview on ‘The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore’.

She also spoke of her support for his presidential opponent at the time, Hillary Clinton.

Meghan hasn’t said anything further about Trump since joining the Royal Family. The Queen and other members of the Royal Family typically remain neutral on political matters.

According to royal biographer Andrew Morton, Meghan gave then-Apprentice host Donald Trump a ‘wide berth’ when he was a guest on “Deal or No Deal” between 2006 and 2007.

Former actress Meghan had a stint as one of the show’s briefcase girls, before she was cast in Suits.

Morton wrote in his book Meghan: A Hollywood Princess: “One guest caused quite the frisson: Donald Trump, then making a guest appearance to cross-promote The Apprentice. He gave girls his card and invited them to play golf at one of his courses.

“Fellow briefcase girl Tameka Jacobs told me, ‘He was super-creepy, but some girls were attracted to money and power and took his number. Meghan was one of the girls who gave him a wide berth.’”

While there are no official engagements in Meghan’s diary for the foreseeable future, she is expected to join the rest of the family at Trooping the Colour on Saturday 8 June.

The royals watch the fly-past from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, which marks the official birthday of the Queen.

Last year was the duchess’ first time attending the annual event. She wore a blush pink off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera dress with a Philip Treacy hat.
