Idris Elba celebrates making history with wife as 'first African couple to cover British Vogue'

Idris Elba and his new wife Sabrina Elba, née Dhowre, have made history as the “first African couple on British Vogue”.

The ‘Luther’ actor married his third wife, a Somali-born model, in Morocco in April this year.

They are pictured together on the front of fashion publication’s July issue for a special bridal cover.

Photographed by Sean Thomas, the pair are photographed wearing their wedding outfits.

Sabrina – who was crowned Miss Vancouver in 2014 – is pictured in a Vera Wang one-shoulder gown with David Morris jewellery.

Idris, voted People's Sexiest Man Alive in 2018, wears an Armani tuxedo suit and an Alexander McQueen bowtie with a shirt by Brioni.

In the cover interview, the newlywed star speaks about how his relationship with Sabrina has enriched his life – even though he never thought he would marry again.

“You know, I’m 47 this year, been married and lived a full life before I even met Sabrina,” he tells the publication.

“It wasn’t something that I wanted to do, get married again. But…”

He adds: “Sabrina has deepened friendships with people I’ve known longer than [her], nurturing the best side of me to make me connect to my friends more,”

Idris was first married to Hanne Nørgaard, a make-up artist, in 1999. They had one child together in 2002, daughter Isan, who lives with her mother in Atlanta, Georgia. The couple divorced in 2003.

He married his second wife, real-estate lawyer Sonya Nicole Hamlin, in 2006 – but the pair divorced within the year after just four months.

Elba also has a son named Winston, born in 2014, with his ex-girlfriend Naiyana Garth.

He also speaks about the pair’s experience of attending the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on 19 May last year.

“That was an incredible experience,” he says. “I was curating the music for that night, so it was a bit of pressure, but it was great. A vibe.”
