From the Middle Ages to the Suffragette era, lipstick has been used by women as an act of defiance throughout history.

And in 2017, it’s being used to fight fascism.

Lipslut, a lipstick company founded by three students, has been selling their signature matte pink shade ‘F*ck Trump’ to raise money for the victims of the Charlottesville attack.

The brand, which was launched just after the presidential election in 2016 as a “middle finger to the current sociopolitical landscape”, was originally donating half of the proceeds from the lipstick to a woman’s charity – but decided to switch things up after the August 11 atrocities and donate to those who suffered at the hands of the attack.

$40,000 (£31,000) was raised in total within just four days of the lipstick’s release.

Originally, when people went to buy the $20 (£15) lipstick, they could choose one out of nine charities which they thought the proceeds should go towards.

But after a car rammed into anti-racist protesters, killing Heather Heyer and injuring at least 19 others, Lipslut added ‘Charlottesville’ option to that list vowing to donate 100% of the proceeds from each sale made in August to help victims.

Which – excluding the other charity money – raised $20,000 (£15,500) towards victims’ medical bills, BLM Charlottesville and the Albemarle-Charlottesville chapter of the NAAC.

Katie Sones, one of Lipslut’s founders and a fourth-year graphic communications college student behind the bright ‘F*ck Trump’ packaging, told the Hollywood Reporter that Lipslut received around 450 new orders since announcing the new donation plans – almost ten times what they’d usually expect in that amount of time.

“I was really disturbed and horrified to see that,” she said.

“I just wanted to help however I could, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.”
