Blogger on the reality of having sex to bring on labour
There’s only so long a heavily-pregnant mum can wait before she finally – finally – goes into labour.
You’ve tried the right foods, you’ve surrounded yourself by different oils and herbal remedies, but your little one is still a no show.
One common solution, however, is one that some people feel a little less comfortable about than eating pineapple or spicy foods, say.
But it works none the less: having sex.
When blogger Sophie Cachia was experiencing a pregnancy that “felt like it went for eternity” at 41 weeks, she decided to do everything in her power to induce labour.

Including having a hot bath, eating pineapple and yep – having sex, which she decided to open up about on in a recent blog post.
“I was done. D-O-N-E,” she wrote on The Young Mummy.
“I remember bursting into tears to Jaryd around the 10th in the morning because I was so sad I hadn’t gone into labour overnight, again.”
So after “googling EVERY possible natural induction technique” she decided to go “full steam ahead”:
“I’d been told to bathe in Clary Sage Oil because apparently it relaxes your uterus, to eat pineapple and to have a good sex sesh,” she recalled. “So I did all of the above.”
So after doing the first two things on her list she called upon her partner, Jaryd, for aid.

“When you’re an overdue sweaty walrus and you need this baby to come out, you do what you gotta’ do,” when she explained.
“And when you’re the husband of this highly hormonal overdue sweaty walrus, you do what you’re told.”
She continued: “Sex was literally the last thing on my mind, so as I got in position on hands and knees, whilst eating an apple and watching Suits, Jaryd came from behind and did what he needed to do. Literally.”
Cachia went into labour that night, and now has a little girl called Florence.

While there isn’t exactly a wealth of scientific evidence backing up the idea that sex induces labour, thousands of women swear by it, and Cachia believes that “semen contains natural prostaglandins which help to ripen, or soften, the cervix and cause it to open”:
“Additionally, the hormone that causes contractions is oxytocin, which is the same hormone that is released during orgasm.
“Let’s be brutally honest, there was more chance of me farting and shooting the baby out pain free than there was of me having an orgasm this heavily pregnant, so his swimmers were going to have to do!”
Whether you think it’ll get things moving on not, it won’t do any harm.
