Four of Aldi’s whiskies named best in the world - and they each cost under £18

Some of the world’s best whiskies don’t have to break the bank, as Aldi has proved.

Four of the German supermarket’s whiskies have scooped awards at a prestigious global competition.

Judges at the Spirits Business Scotch Whisky Masters awarded gold medals to the own label Aldi whiskies.

And each one costs a maximum of £17.50.

The four winning tipples are as follows:

• Highland Single Malt Black Scotch Whisky (£13.49)

• Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£17.49)

• Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (£17.49)

• Hogwash Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (£14.99)

The prize-winning Aldi whiskies held their own in the awards alongside vastly more expensive varieties, including Edrington’s Highland Park Valknut Single Island Malt Whisky (£58.99) and Distell’s Deanston Virgin Oak Single Malt Whisky (£35.75).

The discount supermarket is well-known for its award-winning alcohols, with their quality far surpassing their modest price point.

Earlier this year, Aldi’s Passionfruit Gin Liqueur won a Silver medal in the International Spirits Challenge.

What’s more, last year its own brand Darley’s gin won a gold medal at the International Sip Awards.

Aldi’s competitor, Lidl, equally boasts much-loved budget whiskies. Its Queen Margot 8 Year Blended Scotch Whisky, which retails for £13.49, won ‘Best Scotch Whisky’ at the World Whiskies Awards.
