Tom Holland says Marvel needs to move beyond the straight white guy'

Tom Holland thinks Marvel needs to move beyond the “straight white guy” hero.

The Spider-Man: Far From Home star was speaking to The Sunday Times when he asked if there was going to be an LGBTQIA+ hero in the future.

“Yeah of course,” he responded. “I can’t talk about the future of the character because honestly I don’t know and it’s out of my hands. But I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years.

“The world isn’t as simple as a straight white guy,” he added. “It doesn’t end there, and these films need to represent more than one type of person.”

Avengers: Endgame takes credit for having the first openly gay character in the film franchise (there have been several in the Marvel TV series) and the role was played by Joe Russo.

Russo appears in the scene in which Steve Rogers is – for reasons entirely unexplained – suddenly employed as a group therapist to a bunch of strangers.

He explained to EW that his character is the first 'openly gay' character in the film series, but there are more to be revealed.

“There is a gay character coming up in one of their films, and I think Kevin [Feige, MCU boss] will make that announcement, I’m sure pretty soon,” Russo said.

Feige told The Playlist that some LGBT characters were on the way: “Ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen.

One we may well have seen is Tessa Thompson's Valkryie who was revealed to be bisexual in a deleted scene from Thor: Ragnarok.

Many Captain Marvel fans are hoping Carol Danvers will be a lesbian too but hopefully we won’t have to wait another 22 films to find out.
