Oscar glory beckons for Olivia Colman after Golden Globes win

Olivia Colman is one step closer to an Oscar win after scooping Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical at the 2019 Golden Globes.

The British star won the top acting prize for playing Queen Anne in Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite (in cinemas now), and is being tipped to win the Best Actress Oscar next month too.

The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, 22 January, but Colman is already looking like the odds-on favourite to win the top acting prize.

After thanking the Golden Globes for the amazing sandwiches (no, really), Colman thanked her director “most muchly” before paying tribute to “my bitches” Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, her co-stars in the period comedy.

This is Colman’s second Golden Globe. She won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film in 2017 for The Night Manager, but this would be the 44-year-old Norwich-born star’s first Academy Award nomination.

She has already won a host of awards for her stunning portrayal of the fragile but determined, and largely forgotten Queen Anne, including Best Actress at Venice Film Festival, Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards, and Best Actress at the LA Film Critics Awards.

2019 is going to be a big year for the actress, as she’ll next be seen playing Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown.

The Favourite is in cinemas now.
