New on Netflix UK in June 2023: Best movies and TV from Black Mirror to The Witcher

The eagerly awaited return of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series Black Mirror, now entering its sixth season, leads a stellar slate of new releases on Netflix UK this June.

Also making welcome returns this month are David Attenborough, whose gorgeously shot Our Planet II marks the latest chapter in the nonagenarian naturalist’s latest Netflix exclusive collaboration, and fantasy epic The Witcher, which is back for its third — and sadly star Henry Cavill’s last — season.

June also sees the premiere of Arnold, a limited docuseries all about movie icon — and Netflix’s newly appointed Chief Action Officer — Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Over on the film front, there’s something for everyone among Netflix’s buzzy new original offerings. Action fans can look forward to seeing Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake making an explosive comeback in Extraction 2, whilst musical lovers have the UK streaming debut of Tim Minchin’s wildly inventive Matilda the Musical to celebrate.

Elsewhere, visually striking fantasy animation Nimona - adapted from Nate Stevenson’s subversive fan-favourite graphic novel - is perfect family film night material. Eerie Aussie chiller Run Rabbit Run on the other hand, starring Succession’s Sarah Snook, is decidedly not.

Rounding out the month’s movie highlights are animated block-pup-ster Paw Patrol: The Movie, and Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal’s zany metacomic bromance The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

New movies coming to Netflix UK in June 2023

Paw Patrol: The Movie | 11 June

Ryder and everybody’s favourite litter of fearless, non-governmentally funded pups head to Adventure City in Paw Patrol: The Movie. Tasked with taking down the villainous, Trumpian Mayor Humdinger, whose uncontested dreams of a ‘fun city’ imperil puppers and humans alike, the team’s first big screen outing offers popcorn entertainment for all with a side of surprisingly incisive sociopolitical commentary.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent | 12 June

Nicolas Cage is Nicolas Cage in Tom Gormican’s wackadoodle metacomedy. Yes, here Cage plays a fictionalised version of himself who, down on his luck, accepts a $1 million offer to make an appearance at superfan — and suspected crime lord — Javi Gutierrez’s (Pedro Pascal) birthday party. Matters complicate further when the Face/Off star becomes entangled in a CIA operation to save a kidnapped princess.

Filled with callbacks to Cage’s most iconic movies (and The Croods) and buoyed by the nouveau shamanic practitioner and Pedro Pascal’s insane on-screen chemistry, it’s safe to say that Nick Cage is back. Not that he ever went anywhere.

Extraction 2 (Original) | 16 June

It would appear reports of Tyler Rake’s death were greatly exaggerated. Yes, having seemingly bitten the dust during the breathless climax of Netflix’s 2020 actioner Extraction, Chris Hemsworth’s black market merc is back in action in the cannily titled Extraction 2. Written by Joe Russo of The Russo Brothers fame, this sequel - co-starring Olga Kurylenko - follows Rake and his team as they attempt to extract a family at the mercy of a Georgian gangster.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical (Original) | 24 June

For the few who may be unfamiliar with Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s novel, Matilda is the story of a remarkable little girl with a bright mind and a vivid imagination who uses her extraordinary gifts to take a stand and change her story.

This all-singing, all-dancing new adaptation, based on Tim Minchin’s globally successful stage show, sees newcomer Alisha Weir shine in the titular role while a virtually unrecognisable Emma Thompson opposite her brings Matilda’s arch nemesis, Miss Trunchbull, terrifyingly to life. Spectacular, sentimental, and shot through with a killer streak of Dahlian dark humour, director Matthew Warchus’ film breathes new life into a timeless classic.

Run Rabbit Run | 28 June

Following in the footsteps of other Australian horror offerings like The Babadook and Relic, Daina Reid’s Run Rabbit Run is a psychologically disturbing chiller that’s as much about grief as it is about ghosts. Sarah Snook, in a role a million miles from Succession’s Shiv, is exceptional as Sarah, a fertility doctor whose certainty about the barriers separating life and death come undone when her young daughter starts behaving strangely, forcing her to confront the ghosts of her past.

Nimona (Original) | 30 June

Set in a futuristic medieval kingdom, Nimona follows Chloë Grace Moretz’s titular teen, a shapeshifter with a mischievous streak, as she tries to help exonerate Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed) a disgraced knight who stands accused of a crime he didn’t commit. The only problem is Ballister has been specifically trained to destroy Nimona. Awkward!

As the lines between heroes and villains blur, the unlikely duo soon learn they have more in common than they first thought. Adapted from Nate Stevenson's gleefully irreverent and cleverly subversive graphic novel, this could be the streamer’s next Mitchells vs The Machines.

New TV shows coming to Netflix UK in June

Arnold (Original) | 7 June

Hollywood icon. One-time Mr Universe. Former Governor of the State of California. It’s fair to say that Arnold Schwarzenegger has come a long way from his humble beginnings in rural Austria. This three-part docuseries chronicles the life and times of the Terminator star, with unprecedented access to the man himself and those who know him best.

Our Planet II (Original) | 14 June

More than 100 million households have tuned into David Attenborough’s Our Planet since its premiere on Netflix back in 2019. Now, featuring footage from Africa, the Arctic, China, and India comes Our Planet II. Acutely aware of the climate crises affecting our natural world, this latest series unravels the mysteries of many species’ migration patterns in spectacular cinematographic style whilst reminding us all of the part we still have to play in ensuring the wonders of our planet aren’t lost for good.

Black Mirror S6 (Original) | 15 June

Billed as ‘the most unpredictable, unclassifiable, and unexpected’ series of Black Mirror to date, the sixth season of Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series is arriving at the perfect time as the world around us grows ever more uncertain. Bringing Brooker’s newest tales of the unexpected to life are an impressive rogue’s gallery of stars including Schitt’s Creek’s Annie Murphy, Michael Cera, Aaron Paul, Salma Hayek Pinault, Zazie Beets, and Paapa Essiedu among others.

The Witcher S3 Part 1 (Original) | 29 June

The end of Henry Cavill’s time as Geralt of Rivia is nigh, folks. Yes, with Luke Hemsworth set to take over as the White Wolf next year, The Witcher S3 will be our fond farewell to everybody’s favourite sweary swordsman. Before then though, there’s much business to attend to following the dramatic climax of the last series.

The official synopsis for the season ahead reads: “As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.”
