New on Prime Video UK in June 2023: Best movies and TV from Jack Ryan to Creed III

Prime Video’s line-up for June includes the fourth and final season of action thriller Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, which stars The Office alum turned action man John Krasinski.

Doubling up on the action offerings, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant also premieres on Prime Video this month. Set in Afghanistan and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, this one couldn’t be farther from Ritchie’s last film, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre - in a good way!

Elsewhere, Sorry to Bother You filmmaker Boots Riley is back with absurdist new original series I’m a Virgo, which centres around a 13-foot-tall teen from Oakland, California. And, almost certainly just as absurd, legal reality TV show Tribunal Justice — an all-new Freevee original — starts in June too.

If you’re craving more top-notch telly, then scandalous limited docuseries Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets, the return of petrolhead favourite The Grand Tour, and the upcoming second season of original comedy-drama The Lake will keep you busy.

Over on the film front, there’s an international feel to Prime Video’s original features this month. First up is Medellín, a French action comedy from writer-director-actor Franck Gastambide. Then, heading slightly further south to Spain, there’s My Fault, an intense romantic drama based on Mercedes Rom’s book series.

Rounding out the month’s movie streaming debuts there’s Living, which earned star Bill Nighy both Bafta and Oscar nominations, Rocky spin-off threequel Creed III, Polish romance Heaven in Hell, and football documentary That Peter Crouch Film.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant | 2 June

Despite literally having the filmmaker’s name on it, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is a surprisingly more muted and dramatically intense action thriller than we’re used to from the Snatch director. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Master Sergeant John Kinley, whose life is saved by Afghan interpreter Ahmed (Dar Salim) during a Taliban ambush. When the Taliban pursue Ahmed and Kinley learns his superiors are refusing to intervene, he returns to the warzone to repay his life-debt.

Medellín (Original) | 2 June

Ramzy Bedia is on a mission to save his Pablo Escobar-obsessed little brother from Columbian Narcos in Franck Gastambide’s French action-comedy Medellín. And as if that wasn’t ill-advised enough, matters complicate when Bedia’s Reda decides to take a mob boss’ son hostage for bargaining leverage. If you want a barometer for the level of zaniness you’re in for here, look no further than Mike Tyson’s presence on the cast list.

Living | 7 June

Adapted from Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 masterpiece Ikiru, Living tells a simple yet soulful story about a miserly council bureaucrat (Bill Nighy) who finds himself seeking meaning in his life and contemplating his legacy when presented with a devastating diagnosis. Boasting a screenplay from famed novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, Oliver Hermanus’ formally faultless, beautifully shot film is a quietly profound slice-of-life drama that invariably makes you want to be a better person.

My Fault (Original) | 8 June

Spanish romantic drama My Fault adapts the first book in Mercedes Ron’s bestselling Culpables trilogy, Culpa Mía. Here, fiercely independent seventeen year old Noah (Nicole Wallace) is forced to leave her hometown, friends, and boyfriend behind when her mum marries a rich new husband and they move into his mansion. There, she meets Nick (Gabriel Guevara), her bad boy new stepbrother who she secretly falls madly in love with. Obviously.

Creed III | 9 June

Michael B. Jordan excels himself both in front of and behind the camera with Creed III, the kinetic closing chapter of Rocky’s surprisingly great spin-off sequel trilogy. Having dominated the boxing world and stepped out from his legendary father’s shadow, Adonis Creed (Jordan) finds himself thriving both personally and professionally. When childhood brother figure and former hot boxing prospect Damian (Jonathan Majors) resurfaces after years in jail, desperate for a shot at glory in the ring, Adonis finds himself reckoning with his past and fighting, both in and out the squared circle, for his - and his family’s - future.

Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets (Original) | 2 June

Shiny Happy People uncovers the truth beneath the wholesome Americana surface of reality TV mega-family The Duggars, as well as The Institute in Basic Life Principles, the radically controversial evangelical organisation the family ascribe to. Featuring exclusive interviews with ex-ILBP survivors, Jill Duggar Dillard’s own personal testimony, and recollections of close friends and family who were privy to the abuse and molestation occurring behind the scenes of the TLC series, this makes for explosive viewing.

Tribunal Justice (Original) | Episodes 1-3 drop on 9 June, then weekdays via Freevee

Former New York State Supreme Court Justice Judge Patricia DiMango leads a panel of three judges adjudicating compelling, real domestic cases in this all-new courtroom show from the producers of Judy Justice. Each hearing is followed by a lively and spirited deliberation process, with drama arising from those thorny cases where the judges fail to see eye-to-eye.

The Grand Tour: Eurocrash (Original) | 16 June

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are back, revved up, and ready head out on one of their craziest road trips yet in The Grand Tour: Eurocrash. Setting out on an epic 1400 mile journey in a Japanese Al Capone gangster car, a pickup with convertible aspirations, and a mid-century American micro mini, the guys set out from Gdańsk, Poland and chart a course through Central Europe towards the gorgeous Lake Bled, Slovenia. Expect automobile hijinks, bickering, and banter aplenty.

I’m a Virgo (Original) | 23 June

Boots Riley’s surrealist satirical colt classic (*not* a typo) Sorry to Bother You is one tough act to follow. But, if there’s a way to do it, then I’m a Virgo may well be it. Premiering to hyped fervour at SXSW earlier this year, the absurdist original series revolves around Cootie (Jharrel Jerome), a 19-year-old black teen from Oakland, California.

So far so normal, right? Wrong. Cootie is 13 feet tall (a feat achieved using in-camera wizardry, it’s worth noting), which brings with it a host of obstacles, literally and figuratively, that the series explores. But most important to Cootie is that he is a Virgo - hence the title.

Jack Ryan S4 (Original) | Episodes 1 and 2 drop on 30 June, then weekly

Entering its fourth and final series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan has no intention of fizzling out as an explosive, revelatory finale awaits. Now CIA Acting Deputy Director, Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) uncovers a series of suspicious black ops while investigating internal corruption that could expose the US’ weak spots.

Soon enough, Ryan and the team - Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly, and Abbie Cornish all make welcome returns - unearth a potentially catastrophic conspiracy that leaves Ryan questioning his belief in the very system he has always fought to protect.
