James Gunn open to return to DC after 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'
The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has revealed he is open to returning to make another DC movie after he completes work on Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Talking about breaking the news to Warner Bros., the studio behind the DC films, that he would go back to Marvel after The Suicide Squad, Gunn told GQ Middle East that he's keeping the door open for a return to DC.
"I had to call [Warner Bros Chairman] Toby Emmerich and tell him [about Guardians 3] too," Gunn says.

"But I told him, ‘I'm totally committed to The Suicide Squad, it doesn't mean that I’m just leaving to go back to Marvel forever, and we'll never be back to DC. I just want to be honest with everybody. I put everything in every movie I make, and leave nothing on the floor.”

Gunn is the only filmmaker so far to switch codes between the two rival superhero franchise. He signed up to make the sequel to 2018's Suicide Squad after being fired from the third Guardians of the Galaxy film in 2018 when offensive tweets from his past resurfaced.
After a passionate campaign for his reinstatement, from the cast of Guardians and fans alike, Marvel Studios relented and rehired Gunn, who will begin shooting Vol. 3 later this year.

In the interview, he credits Warner Bros's faith in him with getting him back on his feet in the wake of the controversy.
“I just needed this movie [The Suicide Squad]. I needed to break outside of where I was, because I was not the healthiest person at that time.
"I was getting distracted by things that didn't matter as much to me. With this, I really got back to just this pure creative spirit, which is why I made movies in the first place."
Before Gunn returns to Marvel to shoot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he's working on Peacemaker at DC, a TV spin-off of The Suicide Squad centred on John Cena's character of the same name. That show is due to premiere early 2022 on HBO Max. A UK broadcaster has yet to be confirmed.
Gunn is also working on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a festive TV special which will stream on Disney+ in 2022 before Vol. 3 hits cinemas in 2023.
The Suicide Squad is coming to UK cinemas on 30 July.
