Chris Pratt is ‘thrilled’ James Gunn has been reinstated to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.

The director was sacked by Disney last July after historical social media comments he made resurfaced. However, since apologising profusely, Disney went back on their decision, reinstating Gunn in March, and it’s not just fans who are happy about the turnaround.

Pratt, who plays Peter Quill in the saga, revealed at the Avengers: Endgame world premier he believes the decision is ‘the right move’. He said: “I was so thrilled, so excited. I think it’s the right move, I really stand behind it.

“I’m really proud of Disney for hiring James back and ultimately thrilled for not only us, but also for the fans. I think it’s going to wrap up the trilogy in the best way.

“And Guardians of the Galaxy are really all about second chances and giving people an opportunity to be their best. We’re a ragtag squad of people coming together and having each other’s back,” he continued.

“I think it really worked out the way it was supposed to, and I feel good about it.”

The comments Gunn was initially fired for were made between 2008 and 2011, and included jokes about subjects such as paedophilia and rape. They prompted Disney chairman Alan Horn to say the words were ‘inconsistent with the studio’s values’.

Gunn took to social media when the historical posts surfaced. He tweeted: “Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.”

At the time, Pratt commented: “Although I don’t support James Gunn’s inappropriate jokes from years ago, he is a good man.”

When reinstated, Gunn tweeted: “I deeply appreciate Disney’s decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all.”
