Yahoo Movies Fantastic Beasts Sequel Is Already Written, Says Director
‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ helmer David Yates says a sequel has already been penned for the ‘Harry Potter’ spin-off.
While speaking to GS News amidst promotion for his latest movie ‘The Legend of Tarzan’, Yates, who also directed ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’, ‘Half-Blood Prince, as well as parts one and two of ‘The Deathly Hallows’, revealed how far into production the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ saga was: “We’ve done the first one, she’s [J.K. Rowling] written the second one, she’s got ideas for the third one,” he said.
Speaking of the stories themselves and how he and Rowling are tackling them, he was optimistic about the freedom they had to tell the right story:
“No one quite has ownership of them yet in terms of having a relationship with the material, other than the relationship they’ll have with the movie when it comes out. So, it’s sort of lovely in a way. When we adapted the [Harry Potter] books, you would have to leave things out that you hated leaving out because they didn’t quite work within the structure of the storytelling of the movie or the movie would just be far too long. With this, it’s just pure Jo from the first page to the last page.”
While Rowling is known for writing the entirety of the ‘Harry Potter’ book series, this is her first time as a screenwriter. From what Yates says, it looks like not only are we getting a trilogy for ‘Fantastic Beasts’, but Rowling herself will be penning all three of the big-screen adaptations herself.
‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is set around 70 years before the ‘Harry Potter’ timeline begins, with Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander arriving in New York for an important Magical Congress of the United States of America meeting, with supporting characters played by Ezra Miller (’The Flash’), Ron Perlman, Colin Farrell, and Samantha Morton.
‘Fantastic Beasts’ is in UK cinemas from 18 November, 2016.
