Yahoo Movies No More Sequels In Development After Incredibles 2, Says Pixar
Disney Pixar’s president Jim Morris has confirmed that there are no more sequels on the cards after ‘The Incredibles 2′ is released.
While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Morris revealed that the animation studio will focus on original content once the development of ‘Toy Story 4′ and ‘The Incredibles 2′ come to fruition.
“Most studios jump on doing a sequel as soon as they have a successful film, but our business model is a filmmaker model, and we don’t make a sequel unless the director of the original film has an idea that they like and are willing to go forward on.”
It’s interesting that Morris appears rather anti-sequel and firmly in favour of original stories, which is how a lot of fans believe it should be. However, with the likes of ‘Monsters University’, ‘Finding Dory’, and upcoming ‘Cars 3′ and ‘Toy Story 4′, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Pixar were very much into producing sequels.
The Pixar president also reiterates what their directors are working on and what properties won’t be getting sequels, such as ‘WALL-E’.
“Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out) has an original idea for his next film. Brad Bird, being the director of Ratatouille, is working on The Incredibles and we haven’t really spoken about [a sequel to] that. And WALL-E is close to my heart… but that was really a love story that had its beginning, middle, and end, so we’re not really planning any further stories in those worlds at this point.”
It is, however, easy to see why making sequels would sway many at Disney Pixar. The likes of ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Cars’ are established and globally popular franchises, so naturally more of them would be sure-fire hits. While their original films such as last year’s ‘Inside Out’ it proved a major score - an Oscar and over $850 million proved this - ‘The Good Dinosaur’, Pixar’s second original 2015 release, was their first flop for the company (taking a measly $331 million). So it’s clear to see why some original content could be seen as riskier.
2020 will see two new Pixar movies, with a further two in the pipeline, which will be set in “unusual but believable worlds that take us in even other directions than we’ve pursued in the past.” Here’s hoping that Pixar can maintain their consistent success for original films that’ve established them as the world’s leading animators.
‘Finding Dory’ is in UK cinemas 29 July, with ‘Toy Story 4′ out 13 July, 2018, and ‘The Incredibles 2′ set for a summer 2019 release.
