Blade Runner 2049 gets a phenomenal first trailer

It’s here – ‘Blade Runner 2049’ has its first trailer, it’s every bit as breath-taking as the original.

The old ‘Blade Runner’ is back, but it’s been a long time since we last saw Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) is caught up in something big – the likes of which could throw society into chaos. And it seems only Deckard can help him.

‘Blade Runner 2049’ sees officer K tracking down the old Blade Runner.

But has he bitten off more than he can chew?

Here’s the official synopsis:

“Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.”

Thankfully, there’s plenty to chew on in this awesome new trailer.

First Look at Jared Leto’s character

Ever since Jared Leto was cast in ‘Blade Runner 2049’, there’s been speculation about what kind of role he’ll have. Well, now we’ve finally got our first glimpse at his mysterious role, and it looks as though he’s instrumental in the making of replicants.

“Every civilization was built off the back of a disposable workforce,” he claims. “But I can only make so many.”

Although we know very little about Jared Leto’s character so far, it looks as though he fills the role of Tyrell, Hannibal Chew, or J. F. Sebastian – the men who make the replicants and design them from the ground up. And in this rather cool clip, we even see Jared Leto birthing one of his creations. Incredible. Judging from his demeanour and obvious villainous tendency I’m guessing he’s likely the Tyrell of the movie.

First Look at Dave Bautista’s character

Another first glimpse, we finally get to see Dave Bautista in this new trailer. And he’s not at all what any of us expected. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot, but Bautista is seen sporting a tiny pair of spectacles as looks on, worriedly.

Of course, when Bautista was originally cast, we all assumed he would end up playing a kind of military or security replicant – the kind that really needs to be more bulky and muscular.

That might still be the case, but it looks as though Bautista’s character has a more subtle side to him… not that we haven’t already found out that replicants are fascinating creatures thanks to Roy Batty and his incredible monologues.

Either way, there’s more to him than meets the eye.

A mysterious number…

One of the more mysterious shots seen in the ‘Blade Runner 2049’ trailer, it looks as though Officer K unearths a clue embedded in a piece of wood – a number, literally carved into its surface.

But what does it mean?

At the moment, the number is partially obscured, with Officer K wiping away the dust and dirt to gradually (but not completely) expose it. And what we get so far is “6 10 2”. Sound familiar? That’s the first few numbers of the film’s release date – 6 October 2017. But does that date have a more significant meaning in the ‘Blade Runner’ universe?

Well, the six replicants led by Roy Batty in the original movie hijacked a shuttle to return to Earth sometime in October 2019… and perhaps it all actually went down on 6 October 2019 to be precise.

Cool nods to the original Blade Runner

Clearly, the aesthetic of ‘Blade Runner 2049’ is in keeping with the original movie. It’s a neon-soaked neo-noir landscape with dancing holograms and stylish rain… but it’s more than just set dressing.

Towards the end of the trailer, there’s a cool nod to the ultimate fight between Deckard and Roy Batty – the iconic scene which sees a replicant hurling the Blade Runner through a brick wall… and it’s recreated beautifully in ‘Blade Runner 2049’.

Then there’s the female character which crops up every now and then – clearly the hair style and clothing is an homage to the original Rachael – the replicant Deckard finds working as an assistant to Tyrell in the original film. Obviously, there’s going to be plenty more subtle nods throughout the movie, but it’s great to see some of them creeping into the trailer.
