What's it like to be on an NBA 10-day contract? Ask the injury-riddled Grizzlies

Matthew Hurt was in Havana when he got the call.

He had scored 13 points to help Team USA basketball to a win over Cuba a few days earlier, and now he was preparing for the rematch. The first game was in Osceola, Florida, but now Cuba would be the home team. And Hurt's plans were about to change.

The Grizzlies wanted to sign him to a 10-day contract and needed him to get back stateside as soon as he could. He missed the game and didn't even get to watch — Cuba won 81-67, the first time it had ever beaten the United States in a FIBA game.

Hurt landed in Memphis at about 11 p.m. on Sunday, knowing he'd be with the Grizzlies for shootaround the next day. He was on the court that night, playing five minutes in the Grizzlies' 111-86 loss to the Nets at FedExForum.

"I'm just enjoying the moment. I'm taking it day by day," he said. "I'm very blessed to be in this position, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else."

Hurt is one of five players who have been with the Grizzlies this season on a 10-day contract. The team has dealt with an ongoing injury crisis most of the season, which has meant coach Taylor Jenkins not only needs available bodies to fill out the bench but often needs 10-day players to feature in games.

Hurt was with the Grizzlies for a first 10-day contract earlier this season, playing 55 minutes across his first three games. He earned the contracts and his spot on the U.S. team with his play for the Memphis Hustle of the G League, where he is averaging 21.8 points per game this season.

He had a smoother transition than most 10-day players because he was already with the organization as a whole. For other players, coming in to a team on a 10-day contract can be even more of a whirlwind because they were playing for a completely different organization days or even hours before.

"At the end of the day, it's just basketball," said Trey Jemison, who was with the Washington Wizards on a 10-day contract before he was signed by the Grizzlies and played 14 minutes less than 48 hours after arriving in Memphis.

About a week later, Tosan Evbuomwan said the exact same thing after his 10-day contract with the Grizzlies: "At the end of the day, it's just basketball." He has since signed a two-way deal with the Detroit Pistons.

Jemison did enough during his 10-day contract to impress the Grizzlies, who signed him to a two-way deal after it expired. A two-way contract — teams can use up to three of them — allows a player to go between the NBA and the G League and can be used only on a player with three years or less of NBA experience. Two-way players can be active for just 50 of 82 NBA games, and that's prorated if a player signs a two-way after the start of the season.

Ditto for Jordan Goodwin, who was on a 10-day before the Grizzlies signed him to a two-way deal last weekend. He had been traded on Feb. 8 from the Phoenix Suns to the Brooklyn Nets, who waived him on Feb. 9. He sign the 10-day on Feb. 12. Meaning he technically was on three NBA teams in five days.

"That's the NBA," Goodwin said. "I'm not the only person that's been through it. You've just got to adapt and be flexible."

For players on 10-day deals, there's a balance between trying to soak up as much information as possible during the time with the team and trying to contribute on the court. The Grizzlies have needed plenty of contributions from 10-day players — in addition to Hurt, Evbuomwan, Jemison and Goodwin, Memphis also had Jaylen Nowell on two 10-day deals at the beginning of the season.

In other words, the Grizzlies could put together a complete starting lineup of players they've had on 10-day contracts.

"Obviously 10 days, a week and half, it's not that long," Hurt said. "So just try to take it day by day. Win the day, and try to be the best you can every single day."
