Tua Tagovailoa injury: Dolphins quarterback suffers another concussion against Bills

Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa left the game against the Buffalo Bills with a concussion on Thursday Night Football.

Miami trailed Buffalo 31-10 in late in the third quarter and faced a fourth-and-4 from the Bills' 13-yard line.

Tagovailoa scrambled for a first down and rather then choosing to slide, lowered his shoulder and plowed his head into the midsection of Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

Tagovailoa appeared woozy, wobbling and raising his head off the ground after the play. He reached up with his right arm, flexing his fingers, and then held his helmet with his left hand.

Tagovailoa got back to his feet during an injury timeout and walked gingerly off the field. Shortly after, he went into the locker room.

The Dolphins ruled him out with a concussion six minutes later. It's his third known concussion since 2022.

Amazon Prime sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung said Tagovailoa is conscious and alert and has full movement of his extremities. He was joined in the locker room by his wife, two children and brother.

“I’m just worried about the human being,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters after the game. “I was just worried about my guy. It’s not something you ever want to be a part of. You hope not to.

"It's more about getting a proper procedural evaluation tomorrow and taking it one day at a time. The furthest thing from my mind is what is the timeline ... We'll get more information tomorrow and then take it day by day from there."

Tagovailoa, who signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension in July, didn't miss a start last year but suffered at least two concussions in 2022.

He considered retirement after the head injuries two years ago.

How many concussions has Tua Tagovailoa had?

Tua Tagovailoa has suffered three official concussion since 2022. He had two concussions in 2022 but possibly had another involving a botched evaluation.

Tua Tagovailoa's first possible concussion was in Week 3 against the Buffalo Bills in 2022. His head bounced off the turf when he was pushed by Bills linebacker Matt Milano. Tagovailoa stumbled, got to his feet, shook his head and his legs buckled as he fell toward the ground and was held up by teammates. He briefly left the game but went back in. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Tagovailoa was evaluated by an independent neurologist and out of the league concussion protocol a day later, when his head injury was changed to a back injury. The neurologist was later fired by the NFL.

Four days later, Tagovailoa was twisted and slammed down against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football. He rolled onto his back with his fingers frozen in the air in front of his face, a sign of head trauma described as the "fencing response." He left the game on a stretcher and was taken to a hospital. Tagovailoa missed two games.

In Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers on Christmas Day, Tagovailoa's was dragged to the ground by the waist and the back of his head hit the ground. He didn't show concussion symptoms during the game but he reported symptoms and entered the league protocol midweek. Tagovailoa was placed on injured reserve, sat out the final two games of the regular season season, and the Dolphins lost to the Bills in the wild card round of the playoffs with third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson getting the start. Tagovailoa didn't clear the concussion protocol until Jan. 31, 2024.
